Killed them with everything from a 223 to a 45-70. A 25-06 loaded with 115 Noslers or 117 Sierras is my favorite. A 308 loaded with 165s is a very close second.

7-08 with 120 to 140gr bullets is bad medicine for deer. And bear, and elk, and sheep....

30-06, 257 roberts, 7mm mag, .62 cal flintlock, .54 cal percussion mountain rifle, 45-70 C. Sharps Arms black powder cartridge rifle and last year a 450 bushmaster I just built. just had too give the bushmaster a go. One year used a 338 win mag just a bit too much there.

I don’t know if it’s my favorite, but I’ve killed more deer with a 308 than anything. Tikka 308 gets it done, so there is certainly something to aid about that.

Though I won a Mesa Custom 6.5prc from Rokslide this year so my answer will likely change soon.

My favorite is 7mm with the 168 Berger VLD never had an animal even move after being hit, accurate, excellent all around caliber

I own and shoot quite a few different rifles well. Favorite 3 for deer, in order, are 30-06 with 165 grain interbond bullets, 7mm-08 with 139 grain interlocks, and the .243 shooting Hornady 95 grain SST superformance. All 3 have worked flawlessly on a pile of deer. I choose the 30-06 the vast majority of the time because I love the terminal performance from 0-500 yards.

My Cooper 280AI has been my favorite the last few years, but I just picked up a pile of 257 Roberts ammo loaded with 120 gr partitions on a whim. Got a feeling if I can find a rifle I like then it'll be a dandy.
I have 3 257Robs in a Ruger 77RL, M70 Featherweight and a Montana. I wouldn't consider turning any of them loose. Great round! Good luck with your search.

Savage 111 7rem mag

I will I killed my Mule Deer last year at 438yds with my 6.5 Creed (Savage High Country). I don't think it is the magical unicorn cartridge some guys do but it shoots absolutely lights out and will probably be on my shoulder opener in Wyoming.

7mmWSM built by TS Customs. 162 grain bullets at 3050 fps. My now 14 year old has taken a few animals with it, recoil is impressively light with a can or brake. Been my GO TO for years now.

.257 Weatherby. Plenty of knockdown power and flat shooting for our semi-western open spaces.
