Favorite 280 Remington load for elk

Try this in the reloading forum. More likely to get an answer. I'm looking for the same thing. Starting with 150 grain Nosler partitions and 4831 SC because that what I could find Still looking for primers. Would like to also try RL 22 but haven't been able to find it for over a year. Thinking I'll be able to kick the 150 up to about 3000 fps and see how they group. Good luck.

I would suggest the reloading forum. But also, depending on what bullet you will be shooting, the load data is all available online.

I shoot the 280AI in one of my rifles. I'm pretty sure H4831 pushes a 160AB at 2960. I think I can get going a little faster, but it shoots well right there.

I've been playing around with Hammer bullets. They are picky about the twist rates in your barrel.
My barrel twist wasn't fast enough for the 150s so I'm working up a load with the 136 Shock Hammers. H4831sc seems to do well for me .

I have taken a few elk with a 160 Nosler Partition pushed by either IMR 4350 or 4831. The past few years I have been using a 140 AccuBond and IMR 4831. Both loads have shot well in my 280 Rem rifles.

Ok cool. I have a load worked up with 140 accubonds that shoot really well. My next question was going to be if the 140 accubond is sufficient for elk, but I guess so.

55gr 4831 140 ab @ 2900 fps
will hammer elk to 400 meters easily

My favorite 280 has a 24" custom barrel and the most accurate load chronographs right at 3,000 fps with the 140 AB pushed by a reasonable amount of powder. I have another one with a 22" barrel that is a bit slower, but just over 2,950 fps.

If I was hunting heavy timber I believe that I would go back to the 160 grain pill, but the 140 works.

160 gr Accubonds and IMR 7828 will get you to 600+ yds.
Accurate combo in both my .280s.

My personal preference is a 7 Rem Mag with a 160 Accubond @ 3000FPS

I shoot the 160 ABs over IMR 4831 in my 280AI also. The 160 is a longer bullet than the 140 with a slightly better BC. Others have success stories with the 140's and I don't have experience with either on elk, but would choose the heavier bullet on an animal that size.

These are the numbers I getting with my 280ai , I only have 20 rounds through the gun so far and it has been with the federal premium 155 gr terminal asent

I just re-shot a .280 Rem today with 160g NAB and 58.2g IMR 7828. 2942 fps and 1/2" groups.

A very good combo that does well. I have downed over 20 deer and antelope with this and all have dropped where they stood.

For elk I use the 280 ai but have no qualms about the mighty .280 Rem.
Plenty of energy to 750 yards with this load.

I don't know which load but the .280 remington is overlooked as a big game cartridge for some odd reason, I killed 2 cow elk with a .300 winchester mag. With 180 gr. Ballistic tips. Some will say the B.T shatter on impact, which they do , deep in the vitals of both cows neither went over 100 yards with one shot each (in 2 different years) ,I would try1 60 gr. Accubonds,if you can buy some.
Those B.Ts sure fly good though, 160 gr. Accubonds fly good in my 7 rem. Mag but I haven't taken any game with the 7s, I have 2

Have had my M700 Classic 280 Rem since I was 18 years old. Now I’m 44 and it has never disappointed me. Only have harvested whitetails with it. One large body deer in Wyoming. I’ve hand loaded all mine. Went through 120’s-168’s. Mostly depends on what accuracy you want. With my slow twist barrel it does best with 120 -140’s. Currently using up my 139 Interlocks with 56.2 gr. of IMR 4831. May go to 120 TTSX next.
