130’s or 140’s out to 400 yards or
so fine for elk In your experience? I have killed a bunch of elk, but with 200+ grain out of various .30 cal.’s.

I shoot the 140 grain accubonds and you will be fine out to 400 if you shoot it well to that distance.

I load up 130 partitions for deer and bear and 150 partitions for elk, Speer Hotcor 130s for practice and anything smaller than deer size game.

My Rem 700 BDL built in the mid 1980s likes 130gr GKs and loves 140gr ABs. 150 gr Partitions not so much. Just OK with 150gr GKs. I'm sticking with the 140 gr ABs.

I’m kind of in the same boat, trying to develop a new hunting load for a family Remington 721 in .270 Win, made in 1952. It shoots 130 grain bullets in .400“ groups, so it’s a shooter. I look often at what Nathan Foster at Ballistic Studies has to say, and he kind of leans towards heavier for cartridge in the 270 Win, due to somewhat frangible loads at lighter weights. I’m going to load some 145 ELD-X and see what they look like.

It’s my father’s deer rifle, he bought it after he served during Korea. I’ll have it in Texas next week so one of his great grandkids can harvest with it and put food on the family table. I’m pretty excited.

Like JFK said, 110 TTSX is a dang good choice, but hard to find. I stocked up a number of years ago. My .270 Win pushes them to an easy 3350 fps from an Win M70 with a 22" bbl. Pronghorn and elk have both fallen to that gun and load.

I’ve always shot 140g out of all of my 270 Win. AccuBonds and Ballistic tips (other than Swift A Frames that shot to same POI at 200 yards for my Yukon moose). Never had a bad experience with those in 4 decades of use from antelope up thru caribou.

Thanks for the question. Had H4350 on the shelf however velocity was well below Barnes data at 3124 fps at max charge weight. Didn't try any of the other powders in their data as I was low on them but plenty on RL19 on hand. Extrapolated data from the 130 TTSX, started low and ended up at 3342 fps (thus rounding to 3350). Case was full and no pressure signs, so I felt there was room to go but would be compressing the powder more than I want.

Fwiw, had some Federal 110 TTSX loads with an advertised MV of 3400 fps, and they chrono'd at 3275 fps with 56.4 grains of powder in the one I took apart.

StaBall 6.5 would be a good one to work up with now if I was starting again.

I use H4350. Start low and work up, but look to be up towards 57.5 to 59gr.

I have loads for 130 Partition/AB, 140 Partition/AB, and 150 grain Partitions. I’m getting 3000 fps with the 150 grain Partitions out of a 22” barrel.

My favorite is the 140 grain ABs. All of them are good, though.

What powder are you able to get 3k fps with the 150gr PT?

My Remington 700 likes the 140 ABs 3125fps with RL19 It shoots several brands of factory 140 loads just as good but they are slower. 140 Sierra Game Kings were just as accurate but prefer the terminal performance of the ABs. Shoot what the gun likes!

RL26 is magic for the .270 Win. I get 2900 FPS with a 18.5” barrel and the 150 Partition, I’m 2 grains under max.

I have always had good luck with 130 grain TTSXs but this year I have been shooting 136 grain Terminal Ascents. They don’t shoot quite as accurately out of either rifle I tried them out of but I have yet for a deer to fall out of sight with them.

Thanks for the info and report on the 136 TA's. Have the 130 TTSX's not done well, just reading between the lines in the way you describe the 136 TA's and animal recovery.

I’ve never had an issue with the ttsx. I don’t like shoulder shots, which will definitely put them down immediately. Always a clean pass through and good blood trail but they usually make it a little ways (I can’t remember anything over 100 yards) but in thick stuff or swamps that can suck
