My wife and I are taking a 10 day vacation in Alaska this summer. We plan to spend two or three days in Fairbanks. I wanted to take a day off and go out with a fishing guide. From what I can find on the web, there are two basic choices in the Fairbanks area: northern pike or grayling. I could do either, mostly I'm looking for the "Alaskan Fishing" experience. Does anybody have a good recommendation for a fishing guide to contact?

I've also considered a guide service that can do a fly in for the day. Not so much just for the fishing, but for the experience of taking a super cub into the interior and landing on a lake or improvised air strip. Living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I've spend an adult lifetime of seeing it on TV and thinking I should do it at least once.

Any recommendations? thanks

Are you driving around the state or confined to the Fairbanks area? You can easily drive to the Delta Clearwater or Tangle lakes. Check with Golden Eagle Outfitters in Delta Jct as Jimmy may have some ideas for you.

Alaska Fly In FIshing is a fun experience. Cool flight out to Minto Flats and the pike fishing can be phenomenal. Karl is a good pilot. His boats are nothing fancy out there but they float.

**edit... other than that I wouldn't spend money on any other fishing in Fairbanks. Most of the better fishing is south of the Alaska Range. PM if you want to get pointed in the right direction. There are a few good places for some easy, road accessible grayling fishing

We were going to drive to Fairbanks from Denali.

Fly out with Alaska Fly In Fishing, to Minto Flats. You'll get a decent cabin, a small boat with motor and gas. Cruise around in the boat and catch some pike. It's a great little trip and takes very little planning...

Exactly right, This a bucket list and has been bouncing around in the bucket for 25 years now. The kids are grown and out of the house, so it’s time to do it!

I've also flown into Minto Flats with Alaska Fly-In fishing. We flew in on a floatplane, stayed in one of their cabins, and explored Minto Flats by launching the provided boats from the cabin.

The trips are pretty affordable and the cabins are perfectly fine if you bring your own mosquito net.

The boats and engines they have on site are nice and reliable. It was nice to have a maintained honda outboard when you are getting dropped off in the middle of an endless remote swamp for five days

It's a literal mom and pop operation. Their five-year old son helped load my gear into the float plane.

The pike fishing was nuts and the overall experience was incredible. I saw a pike kill a fully grown Scaup. We caught some 40 inchers, and some triple digits amount of 30+ inch pike.

I've attached a picture of the boat with two average sized pike. They were what we were catching in front of the cabin while the pilot was coming in to land.

I agree, it's pretty affordable and with little effort you should land some fish, just using normal pike lures. I had one weekend out there where I used every single lure I brought along just to see if I could catch one on all of them... after the weekend was over I landed at least one fish with 30-40 different lures... My wife and I try to get out there once a summer for a weekend, pretty fun place to catch fish.

Nick - would you happen to have contact info? I’d like to book a weekend for my wife and I later this summer and am struggling to find info on google.

You might consider driving east to Quartz lake. You can rent a boat there and the fishing was great rainbow and silver salmon. We also fished several rivers and small lakes on the way. We also fished some rivers North of Fairbanks but a good ways North and caught grayling. I thought the fishing was excellent.
