facts as you age:

After being snowed in for 5 months, now rained in for nearly 20 days, I spent the day cutting 4 miles of trail with my son and grandson. Finally a trail through the bark beatle devastation. We didn't make it to the top but made it a little bit past halfway. I can say it kicked my butt. Hopefully the rest will be easier. You have to start somewhere but lord does it hurt.

I have developed a theory that I believe will win me a Nobel prize. I call it the Active Follicle Constancy Theory. The theory postulates that the number of active follicles males have at age 20 remains constant throughout life. Unfortunately they are rarely the same follicles . . . getting old has allowed me to be very philosophical about my hair.

you loose muscle mass and bone density.

lifting heavy things regularly can turn that around.....just do it.

:)
Excellent advice.
Lifting heavy things on a regular basis without falling down (proper form) will also help prevent you from falling down at any time. Falls after 60 seem to start a death spiral.

you are so right, but weight tends to disappear for no reason as well!

I lift weights 5 days a week and walk 1.25 miles 6 days a week, two of those days with a backpack on with weight in it. I also eat well. In spite of that on last years 2 week elk hunt I lost 15 lbs. I managed to gain back 5 then about a month ago within a week that 5 lbs disappeared. I have done nothing different, same ole same ole as always. Now granted carrying less weight around will be easier on my bad back, but still, its crazy.

I fell pretty bad last year, elk had packed the steep trail into ice. My hiking poles would have helped if I had used them. Just bruises, not a death spiral.

Death spiral seems to be associated with falls plus broken hips but your bruising is impressive. So impressive I just packed my trekking poles for next September.

At 60 I am less physically able ,a lot wiser and much more careful. I cant get myself out of some situations with my stamina , strength and balance any longer. So I try to use my wisdom of 50 years in the outdoors to stay out of trouble. Most importantly to limit injuries. I don't bounce back or heal as quickly as I used to. I’ ll be danged if I’m going stop pursuing my outdoor activities and I dont care to be on the sidelines for an injury.

Been hitting a (modified by me) Wendler 5/3/1 regime for the last ten years. Won't be attending any powerlifting competitions any time soon (although maybe I should look at the old folks category???), but I feel strong :)

I find training for endurance more difficult because it takes hours each training day
and progress in terms of improvement is slower. Like training for a marathon in a year.

Endurance is important because a day's hunting in August could be 18-20 hours up here in Alaska,
and hunts are typically expeditions of at least a week.

So summer backpacking treks help, also get the feet toughened up.
Blisters sure can make a hunt memorable. Fortunately I have not had one in over 40 years.

I have gone back to where I started. The hay bales are about 60 lbs. I put 100 in the barn yesterday. I will put about 100 in the barn today. By the time I get done I should be at 900 to 1000. My legs are building along with my arms. My endurance grows a little each day. I sleep a little better each night. It's just a game of muscle memory. I just can't throw them up on the truck 5 high any more. The question is can I do it at 80?

I lifted one bale this morning and almost fell over. I guess I need to get after it more!

Rayporter: You have better ground than I. Once I hit July my ground is so hard I think I would have to drill and blast. I have a month between frozen and baked like concrete.
