I've competed in smaller/local long range steel matches. Shot in the top 3rd every time. Beat a few national named people.

But I for sure don't know everything. I am savvy with my Ap, environmental factors, ballistics, etc. I have access to a phenomenal range out to 1 mile.

Just not sure there's $3400 in Bang for the Buck (get it) for a person like me in this class?

Yep....I am local. I've shot against you a handful of times. We shoot at some of the same ranges. So most of the math and nerd stuff to get hits at distance...I have sorted out.

The positions and quick shooting methods, "wind brackets" and schit like that....not so much.

Wasn't able to capitalize on what would have been the best WT of my career this past rut. 400-500 yards in a fast walk up the far side of a NIdaho cross canyon. No prone options. No sitting options. Did have my tall tripod. Head Up Ass too long to make a play....walked out of my life forever.

And I have never dedicated 600+ rounds of ammo to burn and practice. I can see benefits to that for sure.

I know Dave Ramsey. I am cheap. I've nickel and dimed 17 rounds here, 34 rounds there. I roll my own. It's a PITA to sit behind a press for hours to make 43 rounds.

I can see the benefits of a factory Tikka 8 twist 223 and melting a barrel with cases of factory and getting some real knowledge

Sounds like you know what you need to do. You won't regret it.

Here’s how I analyze this stuff.

My goal when I hunt is to kill a big mature animal. If just filling a tag, that’s easy. It’s not easy to kill a big mature animal.
Would a shooting class help? Yes.
Would scouting help? Yes.

So looking back on unsuccessful hunts, why was I unsuccessful? It wasn’t because I saw a shooter and didn’t get the shot off. It’s because I can’t find a shooter.

If I’m going to spend $10k+ and a week’s vacation to help me be more successful, I want to maximize my return on investment. Which going off past results, means my time and money are better spent on scouting than a shooting class. Maybe some guys have the opposite problem. Or maybe they have unlimited time and money.

Anyway that’s how I look at a lot of this stuff.

This isn’t in response to anyone I particular, but there is an up tick in the amount of “I want a XXXX distance hunting rifle” traffic the last few months. I am getting a lot of questions relating to this, which I do not mind helping, but thought a public post might help answer some questions. It’s an attempt to get to actually using your rifles.


People online tend to act like 600/800/whatever yards is a rifle, cartridge and BDC scope purchase away. When someone asks for advice, or says I’m building an -insert whatever rifle/cartridge you want-, people are discussing hardware not...

I call it the Rokslide Shooter drill, the Equipment vs Practice drill, the 20 shot drill, the Form drill...never 100% sure what to refer to it as. Looking forward to trying it with the OG to see if my unsupported positions improve with the improved rifle balance. And with my ULUL...wonder if using such a light, compact rifle will benefit.

After listening to Cliff's and Jay's class reviews I'm right on the edge of committing to a class.

I attended the same class as Cliff. I don’t listen to podcasts and didn't listen to his, but got the gist of it from the comments.

I'm just an average Jane workaholic that sits behind a desk 8-10 hours a day. When my husband asked me if I wanted to go this class, it was an immediate no. Take a week of hard earned vacation time to go listen to someone lecture me about rifle hunting/shooting?! That's a H* naw. After stewing on it a bit, I said sure.

I had a great time and learned a lot. Especially that I'm never ready to make a quick shot. The animal would be in the next state before I'm set-up to take a shot. Not only did the class help my shooting technique but helped me to be ready within a few seconds notice. Was it all skittles and rainbows? No. I got frustrated a time or 10 and nearly choked on some humble pie. It's been a month since the class ended and I still talk positively about it.

As for value, I originally thought the price was steep. But now I'm looking at when I can take another class. When you factor accommodation, great food, training for a week, it's a good deal. For me, there was a lot of value not only in the course, but everything being taken care of outside of me showing up with with my gear. Also, I think being able to practice in varying mountain terrain, on private property, is a huge benefit. Sure, I can go practice on national forest land but I'm not going to have a high level of assurance a random hiker isn't going to pop-up and on national forest land, it would most definitely always be the rifle and not me when I miss.
