I'm trying to find out if anyone is running the Exped Downmat HL Winter M?

Right now I have a Thermarest X-Therm Max, but I can't stand all the noise it makes. I toss and turn all night and keep waking up whenever I hear the crinkling it makes, plus I don't need it to be square so I can save just a little weight. The Exped is 16.9 oz and R-value of 7.0 vs the X-Therm at 23 oz and R-value of 5.9 So, just a bit of a weight savings but the R-Value would bump up a bit too.

My question is, does the Downmat make any noise and how reliable would this one be? Anyone with experiences with these two?

I have extensive experience with the exped just not the downmat winterlite.

The external materials being the same I can tell you there are a few factors that will add or diminish the noise factor.
- drop cloth material or tent flooring.
- material of bag/quilt when you move.
- tour clothing when you sleep.

As each of those will vary I can tell you I don't get that loud crinkly sound when using my expeds that I've had with other pads. (Also amount of air in the pad well effect the noise factor. ) The down insulation will also mitigate a ton of that loud hollow crinkle sound.

I'm sure there are others with $.02, but I haven't regretted my switch to exped.

The Exped Downmat HL Winter looks to be very comparable in materials and rating to my Downmat 9. Mine is R-rated at 8, while the HL is a 7. Thickness on both is 3.5". Fabric looks identical. Shapes are obviously different. My DM9 is very quiet compared to the X-Therm Max I used to own. That thing was a noise-maker for sure...very obnoxious to me. I think I'm a permanent Exped guy now. Warm, cushy and quiet with a low failure rate.

Based on my experiences, the HL Winter would be a substantial upgrade to the X-Therm Max as long as the tapered shape works.

All good things to know. Glad to hear all the positive responses on the Exped because my only one had a hole in it from the day I opened the box so I exchanged it for the X-Therm. I guess I'll bite the bullet and get one to try it. Thanks everyone!

I do not have the Downmat Winter HL Winter but do have the Downmat 9 XL and Synmat 9. Both are heavier than the HL that you are looking at. That said, they are both durable and are a furnace. When I backpack in the frigid weather, I look forward to sliding into the quilt (EE, Revelation, 10F) perched atop a pad that will produce heat and not remove it.

I say go for it.
