Exo Experience Challenge

Are folks using OnX and Strava to track their miles? Or if I just use OnX can I just manually copy that data into Strava as that is how it appears?

Ill be using Strava to track my miles. I 'feel' thats how Exo wants it done. I might be completely wrong. Are you on the discord server? Mark is fairly active on the discord with responding to questions.

I am not. I pretty much despise apps and downloading Strava was like pulling teeth for me. I watched the video on how to submit the miles and didn’t see the advantage to using Strava as 99% or more of us use OnX already and could have just as easily snapped screenshots of OnX tracks. I presumed Strava was going to have the ability to submit through the app but it’s just going to be screenshots.

Does Strava work without cell service? I got this message that makes me think it may not? I’ll give it a go here today.

There will definitely be hikes I do that I want to have in OnX as a track and running two apps to track is prly gonna drain the battery idk. Maybe I’m the only one that’s never used Strava.

Edit/Update: I manually entered the hike into Strava. After doing so I saw there was a new alert notification so when I clicked on it, it then showed the actual hike, but when I clicked on You where it should show it they weren’t showing. I closed the app and restarted it and then there were two duplicate hikes in there. I then deleted the manually entered hike. Maybe it has to be connected to WiFi or it’s just super slow/glitchy. I guess I’ll take the .15 more miles Strava gave me over OnX but now I can’t wait to complete this challenge just so I can delete this app lol.

Went out today to an area that did not have cell service. Used both OnX and Strava to track simultaneously. When I got done and clicked “finish” in Strava it gave a message “an error occurred.” Couldn’t view anything in the Strava app without cell service. When I got back to service I thought maybe it would update but nope, nothing saved.

Didn’t have my phone in airplane mode like I normally do, not sure if that would have helped.

You should be able to track on onx, or a gps watch, then export the .gpx track and upload it to strava.

I’ve only done that on a desktop, I don’t know if you can do it on a phone directly.

The thrust is: if you track with a gps, you should be able to extract that gps track and manually upload to strava. But beyond that concept I’m definitely not the guy to know the details!

Same thing happened to me. It doesn't like operating out of cell service from what I've experienced. My hike did upload once I was back in service, but I really dislike Strava. An alternative option would to screenshot every hike regardless of service,

Track it on a gps watch if you have one then have that send to strava. Ive found that much more reliable than strava direct.

Me and the wife are in on goat. I’m not sure why they chose Strava over OnX. I couldn’t even get Strava to load up without cell service OnX will. This will limit where we can hike. We don’t have cell service at the house half the time.
I’m glad I’m not the only one with this frustration. I was beginning to feel like an old crumudgeon.

I wouldn’t feel limited to do the activities in cell service, as others have mentioned above you should be able to export the track from OnX or Garmin etc. (although I haven’t actually done this yet) OR worst case scenario I now know you can manually enter the info in. It did work out of cell service for me but just took a LONG time to show up in Strava and definitely appeared to not save at the end of the hike but during the hike it showed my progress very similar to OnX as I shared in that screenshot above.

I don’t want to come off as a Karen but this seems to be another reason I would have thought they would choose OnX as to my knowledge there is no way to counterfeit a track in OnX but I’m pretty sure a dishonest person could just manually enter all their miles into Strava and get credit for this challenge.

I don't think there is a way to edit your route in strava, you can only shorten it. I just tried because I forgot to start recording yesterday and only remembered about halfway so those miles were not captured. Oh well. I also have not had an issue out of service, yesterday on my hike I didn't have service when I started the recording and it captured it just fine. Might be a setting on your phone. I know a ton of people who use strava in my area for biking and trail running (lot of out of service areas) and they don't seem to have any issue.

Were you in Airplane mode? I changed the background app refresh setting based on the prompt before I started my hike.

Nope, not in airplane mode, haven't tried it with that on yet. I'll try it though before I need to use it. I'm not a fan of new apps either but it is what it is. I have a lot of problems with onx tracking though too.
