Evolution outdoors Hyde- 100gr aluminum hesitations

Ok boys, that didnt go as expected at all.

I shot the aluminum version into a 6x6. The broadhead survived but the victory 60 grain stainless insert did not, nor did my arrow.

Blades bent slightly, but upon removal of the blades the ferrule still spun true.

Decided to swap insert componentry this year and went to a 50 grain stainless half out from easton and got a wild hair to try the same thing again with another head. This time the broadhead survived, the arrow survived and shockingly after a hell of a time getting the head out of the wood, it seemed to be in as good or better shape than the first one. I think I can say that my hesitation has been squashed for now.

The top pic is the head prior to the shot, second pic is the broken arrow after the shot with the head still looking good.

Third pic is 2nd arrow and head after the shot. I guess I'm sold

I’m a little late to the party, but I’ve been using Hydes for a couple years now. I’ve shot elk, bear, antelope etc. The expandable blades usually have some chips after they go through an animal. Some times they’re bent depending on what they contact or what they hit after they exit. I’ve never had one break. I’ve had one fixed blade tip slightly curl. I believe this was due to hitting a rock once it exited. All in all, I’m pleased with their performance on game and their fight. As far as durability goes, I’ve never had a ferrule bend. I just got done putting an edge back on a couple of Hydes I used to take an antelope. The expandable blades weren’t bent, but they were chipped, so I replaced them. I’ve come to accept the fact nearly every expandable is going to need repairs or replacement depending on the broadhead. Sevr heads are probably the most “durable” expandables I have used. They are also the most forgiving in flight broadheads I’ve used. I have also lost more animals with those heads than any other head I’ve used..so have my friends. I sold over a dozen Sevr’s of different sizes and got away from them. I’ve been intrigued by their new hybrids, but I’ve been stung one too many times to go back..I’m jaded lol The thing I don’t like about the Hydes are their price, but anymore almost all heads are expensive. At least the Hydes are made in America. I also don’t like having to replace the little plastic rod every time the blades are deployed, but that’s part of the system that makes it effective. Every animal I’ve shot with the Hydes have suffered massive internal damage. They’re dependable, forgiving in flight, and fly with my field points. I can’t ask for much more.

I'm fortunate to have never had an issue with a sevr, but I hear of it more and more and I'm not sure why. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll be using them again this fall, and until I change my setup I'm not worried about the 7075 anymore.
The titanium ferrule on the Sevr is almost too good to be as affordable as they are. Ive had nothing but great luck with them, but because I'm a tinkering fool I always have to try something else. My only other hangup with the hyde is a deflection based on blade opening. I had that happen last year for the first time ever with a grim reaper and I was super bummed just because I never thought it would. Time will tell with the hydes, but even though they are expensive they sure seem to be worth it.

I tinker with broadheads too 😂 Nothing will ever be perfect enough to hold me to one design I suppose. I just ordered 24 keaup broadheads after watching Lusk’s review. For Chinese knockoffs they performed quite well and held up better than most of the American owned/Chinese made brands. The reviews online are great for the most part. If they fly well and open reliably for me I plan on using them for does this fall. At $24.99 for a 6 pack I figured I won’t get hurt if they end up not meeting expectations. I did have a Hyde deflect inside an elk last fall. I center punched a cow elk broadside at 28 yds. It should’ve been a double lung, but it redirected course once inside and exited via her stomach. It was wild to see. That being said, I’ve seen a Magnus Stinger do the same thing. I have a friend who won’t touch QAD exodus heads because he’s had them deflect inside elk on more than one occasion. I usually keep an exodus in my quiver for mercy shots if an animal is down, but not dead because the heads are built like tanks and I don’t have to worry about ruining them vs an expensive mechanical. If Sevr heads locked I think they would be the cat’s meow.

I took this antelope opening day this year with a Hyde. The first shot was at 46yds and was fatal. It zipped right through him. He ran and stopped at 90 yds, slightly quartering away. I luckily put a second arrow in him, which is the one sticking out in the picture. It ate through the edge of his shoulder when exiting. I had to replace the expandable blades on both heads and touch up the fixed blades. The 3rd and 4th picture are of a Hyde that cut through a bear’s spine and went through his entire core before exiting his ham. It buried into the ground due to the steep angle. It’s also the same broadhead my brother stuck in my leg on an elk hunt that caused a trip to the Urgent Care to sew up. I can honestly say that was my least favorite pack out 😂 I just automatically assume I will have to replace the expandable blades on every Hyde I use to take an animal. I wish they came with extra blades for this reason.. especially for the price.

I have a handful of those Keaup's on the way too. These tiny Texas deer aren't tough so everything blows right through and hits the pile of rocks that is central Texas. Everything is 1-time use so $5 a head sounds way better than $15-25 if they open up correctly.

Central TX…does this make you a longhorn fan? We might have to start a separate Keaup thread this fall..that might stir more controversy than the boys discussing the .223 for large game thread 😂 I’ll be back down in Oklahoma later this fall and can take 6 deer, so hopefully we’ll have a fair amount of critters to share results between the two of us.

Wow you ain't joking. That thing is chowdered. But dead animal is dead animal. All depends on what our measure of success is. I honestly don't think we can expect fixed blade (iron will, day six, etc) durability from a expandable type broadhead

Austin ain't Texas anymore, luckily Stephenville has a school with a pretty good rodeo team.

I've got 5 Whitetail tags so I should have 1 of those broadheads left for the before and after photos!

I rodeoed in college.. most people outside the middle of the country I talk to don’t even realize that’s a thing😂 Norman ain’t Oklahoma anymore either😒 Good luck this season

Oh man dude that was you who took one to the leg!!!!! Holy moly you must like hydes to keep using them after that fiasco lol. Nice antelope, I'm super jealous! I have personally never seen a deflection with any head until this one and it was shocking enough that I dont think I could use that same grim reaper head again, even though I killed a ton with them. That or I'd just have to be more selective. It was a follownup shot, and the animal was already down with busted shoulders but not expiring as quickly as id have liked, so it wasn't a big deal but still shocked me to see a 20+ inch gash where it just slid along the ribs.

😂 Yeah, I’m the guy who took one to the leg. The story did earn me a free 3 pack of Hyde broadheads from Evolution Outdoors, but I can’t say the juice was worth the squeeze 🤣. I misunderstood your deflection issues. I thought you meant it hit bone and deflected inside the animal. To hear it totally deflected along the outside of the animal is wild. I have wondered about that happening with heads, especially front deploying heads that aren’t cut on contact. I’ve used GR microhades hybrids and have had good success, but they’re a little more finicky in flight than the Hydes if the bow gets out of tune.
