Evinrude E Tec?

I have been a Merc man since I had my first one in 1960. That being said, I would get a 4 stroke for sure. I had to be convinced by a couple of friends and I am a fan now. They are quiet, start easily and very economical.. The only negative is they are heavier than the same size 2 stroke. None of them are cheap!!!

I would not be worried about that year of evinrude. The 2000-2002 era ficht motors really tarnished the brand. I had 3000 hrs on the old 1998 150 evinrude, and this 2011 has 950 hrs so far and has been great. It was the only 200hp that was light enough for this old boat that was used to lighter 2 strokes.

If I was a buying a new motor today however, it would be a Suzuki or Yamaha. IMG_2120.jpeg

Great word on this, went down the FICHT rabbit hole and it seems '17 is well clear of that and most of the other issues Evinrude has had.

Tohatsu and Yamaha are my go tos for inshore use, but this specific case should be a good enough deal that it wouldn't be the end of the world if I repowered in a year or two. And, with less than 200 hours, should still have plenty of tread on the tires until things start coming up. Thanks for the insight on this!

That’s not even broke in yet. Evinrude advertised a 300 hr service interval but I still do every 100.

Do yourself a favor and buy BRP xd100 oil you can get it from Walmart. Don’t buy off brand

My first one I had tuned for the xd100 oil, it was nice because it used less oil but I don't remember being able to get it at Walmart I think I had to buy it at the boat shops around here. The other two I've had we tuned for the regular oil and I just use whatever's available and cheap. My current engine was made in 2015 and all I've ever used in it is Penzzoil sometimes the extended whatever and sometimes the premium. That thing gets used hard, staying on plane through thin tunnels and tight turns running the shallow marshes in duck season works an engine like nothing else, hauling loads of lumber and 4 wheelers to camp all summer long. So far so good. This engine was also sunk in saltwater by the previous owner not that it's relevant to the cheap oil or anything.

Yamaha is the only motor I'll buy. Suzuki has a good rep amongst people whose opinion I trust. I had a Honda I didn't care for, had corrosion issues and was harder to work on than the Yamaha. It was quiet and fuel efficient but it had VTEC and I hated the power band. That's what you get when you buy an auto engine adapted for marine use. A couple buddies have newer Mercury's which seem good but they don't have a lot of time on them yet so I'm not convinced.

I've seen enough and done enough I'm only ever buying Yamaha.

I have 2018 90 hp. No issues, but not sure id get another with them not being made. There light and lots of torque, there is a good e-tec forum but i forget what its called at the moment. Mine is just stupid good on oil and gas. I only use xd100 on the regular oil setting and xd30 for olys brew. I change bottom end oil yearly regardless of what evinrude says, And it gets a going over at the dealer every 3 years to keep the extended warranty. They do the water pump, sparkplugs, inline fuel filter and bottem end oil at this time.

The guys who rebuild injectors tell you to use no fuel additive or only the evinrude 2+4 additive, as lots of others eat the stainless steel screen in the injectors. Also run olys brew for the gas. and a proper fuel filter/water seperator.

Walmart and Amazon has it. I go into walmart when i forget to order from amazon. No doubt you could get away with cheaper oil but im also the guy who only uses ethanol free fuel religiously.

I hear stories all the time of guys having issues. One of my buddies was cussing out his yamaha because it was giving him fits all the time. I took a day to come over and found that he was using the wrong fittings to his portable fuel tanks the whole time. We bought the correct ones and magically the issues went away. Proper maintenance goes along way with outboards. Also seems like motors that sit for long periods unused have way more issues than the guys who are running them hard.

If you use good fuel, change your filters and do your yearly maintenance most brands of outboards newer than 2008 will last you a long time.

Yep we use ours quite frequently, never use any fuel additives or anything just running fresh gas constantly through it seems to take care of things. The only problem I ever had with a Yamaha was always having gummed up carbs but back then there was a lot of sitting and I always put some sort of fuel additive in there trying to remedy it and probably made it worse.

First I've heard in 30 years on the water of an outboard being tuned for a specific brand of oil... down rabbit hole #2 we go! This is why you ask online before buying hah
So with xd100 the ECU actually injects less oil, but you have to use xd100. If the ECU is tuned to the other setting you can use any commercially available oil and it uses more of it, which still isn't very much. You can still use the xd100 on that setting but it'll burn through it quicker. I like the regular setting and use cheap oil, the xd100 is expensive and if you accidentally run out you could be in trouble trying to find it. I have an interface cable and the Evinrude software and changed the tune on my own but any dealer can do it as well.

Simpler terms. The motor will either run 100 parts fuel to oil or 50 parts fuel to oil... hence the name XD100 or XD50 if you are buying BRP brand. Otherwise you can run any 2stroke oil on the 50 setting.

Alot of guys will run xd100 while on the 50 setting for extra lubrication.... The ETEC forum will go over this alot better if you really want to go down the rabbit hole.

2 stroke vs 4 stroke. you are burning oil in the 2 stroke so youll find that you can experiment.

I have been a Merc man since I had my first one in 1960.

I bet the 80s were rough on you as a Merc guy!!! 😃 They essentially made expensive anchors for over a decade! I'm really not sure how they survived as a business after what they did to their reputation during that time.

For the record- I'd own a newer one today with no reservation.

I had a 125 HP Merc on my 15' flat bottom ski boat for years. I finally got a 24' fly bridge with a Mercruiser I/o. Then I got a 24' pontoon with a 90 Merc 2 stroke. I now have a 1957 trihull with a original Mercruiser I/o that I bought from the original owner 2 years ago.

I had a 90 etec for years that was absolutely abused like you wouldn’t imagine. It never missed a beat until I sank it

All salt water use, never maintenanced, and always used hard.

This is also coming from a guy who’s always had Yamahas.
