I am thinking of doing an out of state hunt and I am interested to see recommendations on the must haves.

Welcome Dillan. We're gonna need a bit more info. What State are you headed to and what type of hunt?. Are you spiking out? Truck camping? How much do you like lugging things around? Early season, late? Bow or rifle? You going alone or with someone else to help out?

Guy named @luzianafellar had a good thread last year that went from first purchase to after hunt thoughts.

Had a ton of feedback and would be a great starting point.

Search YouTube for "Elk hunting pack dump" and have fun. I have been making/refining my list for the past 3 months! Good luck!

I’m going to try a late season elk hunt in central Idaho. I’m used to lugging quite a bit and I’ll be using my 300wsm. Me and my buddy are probably going to be out for 5-7 days.

...

The first thing you will learn is you can hunt more effectively NOT lugging a bunch of gear around.

Most new guys take way more than they really need.

I will never forget a guy I met in an archery season once. He had his bow of course.....and a knife, bottle of water, headlamp and a GPS- thats it. He didn't wear a pack- all in his pockets. He was flying around in those mountains and covering 12 mile days like it was nothing. The water was good there so he could fill up in a few good spots.

Now its different late season due to weather...but a guy that goes 20% further is more likely to tag out.

Base camp? Backpack camp? Oh and... what’s your height and weight? Last question... on a scale of 1 to 10 what is your ability and willingness to work hard? 1 being a road hunter and 10 being boot camp after enlisting in the Marines

Of course I'm not advising you don't wear a pack or bring essentials.

But I think we can all agree....if we brought every possible item we might need....we would be lugging around a bunch of non essential stuff.

The guys above are right...there is a bunch of good commentary on this site if you search.
