My brother-in-law and I are looking at a elk hunt in WY either next year or 2021 in the 84, 85, 86, 89, area (not 100% sure yet).

Right now I am trying to find out if there are any outfitters in that area that will pack out elk for a fee if you aren't hunting with them. I know we are capable of packing one a handful of miles but if we could line up a pack service it would really open up the possible areas we could hunt and reduce the down time associated with packing out by foot.

If anyone has an outfitter they would recommend please comment or shoot me a message!

I'm not sure if they do Jackson area, but you can try out Lander Llama Company and Ramshorn Llamas.

Just curious, why have you landed on those zones? Are they a draw or can you hunt them on an OTC tag?

There used to be a service in Jackson called 'You tag em, we drag 'em" or something similar. Not sure if they're still in operation, but you could call the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, or the Wyo. Game and Fish office in Jackson.

There are definitely quite a few in that area. A habit I have is calling outfitters months in advance when I know I will be hunting in that general area to see if packout is an option. Most outfitters fall in to the camp of "as long as we dont have obligations to our clients at the time you need us, we can help you out." Prices in my experience run from $250-$500. I arrange ahead of time as many options as I can and then if need be, get in contact with the outfitter when I get my hands on the bull via inReach. The more work you do in advance of reaching out, the more options you will have.

One great thing about contacting outfitters for this purpose is so that a lot of times, the outfitter will say that they cannot help you but they will provide you with other outfitters that offer said services or put you in contact with locals/ranchers that would be willing to help you out.

There are no OTC tags in WY (for non-res anyways, not sure about residents....)

They are general units so about as available as a non-resident can get in wyoming. Obviously lots of other options but I'm also interested in hunting mule deer in the same area and figure between the two I should be able to get a tag in the same area 2 out of 3 years.

Thanks, that's exactly my plan. Still hopeful I may get a few leads before I just start googling and calling random outfitters. I figured we would end up packing to a trail and potentially waiting a day or two but that's still less hassle than keeping a horse 12 months a year and hauling them halfway across the country once or twice a year!

The Forest Service will have a guy/gal who is an outfitter coordinator or something like that. That person will be able to tell you all the licensed outfitters operating in the area and give contact information. That's probably the best way to get 100% legit operations.

Tag n Drag doesn’t start offering services until late season and mainly up in the refuge.

The person at the Forest Service is call the outfitter permit administrator.

You need 2 points to draw that tag so you can only guarantee a general license every third year and that could change. Things aren’t getting any easier.

Yeah, when I was saying how frequently I would like to hunt the area that includes elk and deer hunts as well as maybe getting lucky and occasionally pulling a random tag.

Might look into the draw odds on deer over there
