All of these spikes and a half dozen more that I don’t have pictures of were all killed with a 270 shooting 140 gr accubonds.

If I was chasing mature bulls and taking long shots, I’d take a magnum but I’d be comfortable with a 270 within 300 yards.

My normal hunting unit is spike only.

There was a great old hunter who made a lot of his living hunting and writing about it in Outdoor life when I was a kid. His name was Jack O 'Conner and there wasn't much he didn't kill with a .270

Killed several elk with the .270. The 130's are great, so are the 150's.

No worries with that caliber.

It just seems that most people I talk to say that it is not nearly powerful enough. Everyone says go with a .300 but I have my .270 that has barely been used. I typically use Winchester BST's at 130gr and am not sure on what is a safe bet using for Elk.

Those "most people" and "everyone" are dumb. "not nearly"?? Rediculous. This question comes up all the time and generates the same blather that's in this post (and I'm now a part of it! Hurray for me!). If you can shoot your rifle accurately, your bullets are gun are perfectly fine.

"most people" and "everyone" also say that magnumitise is kind of like buying a huge truck and lift kit. What are you compensating for?

Killed elk with 7mm-08 (ballistic twin, no matter what anyone says) with 140s, don't even think twice.

every elk I ever killed was with a .270 mostly 140gr boattails . a few with 130 gr coreloct. and a few with 150 gr coreloct .

I found my gun likes(groups best ) the 140 gr boattails . bullet/caliber makes zero difference if you can't hit the animal in the first place.

nothing wrong with going with a bigger caliber but never let anyone tell you a .270 is to small for elk. it will kill any animal on this planet. though it might not be my first choice in every instance

.270 is great for elk, unless of course you’re looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle. In that case it’s unproven and doesn’t have 100+ years of success to its name. Good luck on your hunt.

First hand experience from last year with my wife, she is fairly recoil shy so I set her up with a 270. She was shooting 130gr federal fusion rounds and had plenty of practice behind her rifle and knows it well. She shot a large cow last year at 404 yards. The first shot the cow just stood, she put a second shot in her and the cow fell. The bullets were neatly 3 inches apart and both were just on the opposite skin. Both bullets were about 115grains after recovered. The caliber and bullet did what it needed to do. That being said this next year if she draws a bull tag I will switch her either 140gr accubond or 150gr partition, just to get a little more punch. Definitely a more than capable round for elk at normal hunting distance.

I'd buy a .270 for elk hunting if I didn't already own a 7mm-08 that I love. Like you said - ballistic twin, except that the 7mm-08 can handle 160 class like my 162-grain ELD-X that give it an advantage over the .270 (at least in my mind ;) ).

270 will get the job done for sure, shot placement is the most important thing though. I have heard of a lot of guys killing elk with a 243. I have had solid, boiler room, hits on elk at around 300 yards with my 300 win mag and they still go for a while. Elk are very tough animals. I like the Nosler Partition in my 300, 180 gr. I have my 270 loaded with 130 gr ETips and would take that for elk without hesitation if I didn’t have my 300.

I've seen a lot of elk die from a .270. Use a quality heavier bullet, keep the shots under 400 and you'll be set. Shot placement is the most important.

More Elk in NM and CO are killed every year with .270 and .30-06 than any other calibers. I am a .300WM and 7 RM user....but would not be afraid to pick up a .270 Win. and hunt elk with a heavy Nosler partition load.

.270 Win w/ 150 grain Nosler Partitions was my weapon of choice for a couple years. It was responsible for killing 1 bull at 407 yards and another at 350 yards. Both bulls absorbed 2-3 rounds in the vitals before they went down, but with elk I typically shoot until the animal is on the ground. If I had a lightweight 300 WM and I could stand to shoot it I'd take that out. As it is I like shooting the gun I can put more rounds through at the range and for me it's the .270 and now a 6.5 CM w/ 140 accubonds. Pick a good bullet and your .270 will do just fine.
