Elk experiences with 6.5 PRC and 156 EOL

Dude.

I appreciate the effort, but read the post. Help me understand where I said he didn’t have 100% faith in the cartridge?

Between the two of us we’ve notched quite a few elk tags. I’m in the lead with numbers but he’s got me beat with size.

It‘s the innanet and all and everyone has something to say, I get it, but I’m just looking for stories like nmarchr or brockel.

I think the point is, your quote says it’s “borderline for elk”. Which is objectively not true inside of 700 yards(at least).

Congrats on the positive feedback for the 6.5 PRC and it's lethality on elk. Just for laughs I think it's hilarious that everyone missies the point that shot placement is always key. I was on a UT elk hunt and heard horror stories regarding the 300 PRC with Berger 215's point on shoulder shots around 900 yard ranges. Watched a couple of videos of the same shots. Flattened the elk, only to have them get up and run off. Never recovered. Bullet blew up and obviously didn't penetrate. Point is SHOT placement.
HA! I’m calling bs on a 215 blowing up and not penetrating. I shoot a 300rum and have killed a bull at 60yds with the 215 at 3100fps and it never blew up. It exited, in fact, just like every other elk or buck I’ve shot with them out to 605yds.

Reviving this thread a bit…

I have only shot 3 elk with a rifle, and all have been with a 300PRC - 208 ELDM At 220, 225 ELDM at 417, and 225 ELDM at 625.
  • The first bull took two shots, but seemed dead on his feet.
  • The second bull dropped on impact, and appeared to be dead. When I got to him, he was still alive. I’m unsure what happened on him as there were two shots in him (the second shot at 10 yards), but both seemed through lungs.
  • The bull last year was hit slightly higher than desired (appears high lung on the video) at 625 and it dropped him. He got back up and ran off. I never found a drop of blood and I watched him run for a literal mile through snow.
I was fortunate enough to draw a spectacular Wyoming elk tag this year, and I think I am going to swap out the 300PRC for my 6.5PRC.

I have a 6.5PRC with 156 Bergers loaded by Unknown that I love to shoot. I think it’ll get the nod this year as the “knock down power” of the 300PRC seems to keep eluding me. I will report back on the performance of the 156 bergers if I get an opportunity.

I don’t think you'll be disappointed. I wasn’t. And I’ve killed them with 300 NMI’s, 7-300 NMI’s and 28 Noslers.

The 156 wounds were plenty violent

Lots of testimony that that Berger sure works. Myself, I feel a bit more confident using a bonded bullet on elk.
