You must not be familiar with lever action style rifles or old black powder straight wall cartridges that were updated to smokeless powders. This cartridge has a large caliber bullet that is heavy but only goes 2000 to 2200 fps. These cartridges are not hypervelocity with fragmenting bullets. They are a slow bullet that will mushroom and pass through. They are used to hunt everything from the smallest deer to moose and buffalo at short ranges typically 50 to 250 yards. The 45/70 can be setup to shoot long range but that is outside of what the OP is trying to do with it.Wow, that’s a huge cartride and bullet for an elk. Hope you have some meat left.
So I picked up this 45/70 to hunt elk in the timber in the coast of Oregon what’s your thoughts on the Hornady 325 gr ammo
