168 gr ELD-M 308 running about 2650 on a 20” barrel. First hand load on a live animal and I gotta say I’m pretty impressed. Through the front left shoulder of the axis and lodged under the skin past the ribs. Last two pictures are a red sheep same round entrance and exit hole.

Shot distances? Did they drop or run?

Thinking of trying the 162 eldm in my 7-08

7mm-08 150 grain eldx factory load. Two shots on a spike elk at 500 yards. One stayed together pretty well. The other had separated in the washing machine after forgetting them both in pants. One shoulder shot, one higher shot hit spine.

I know this is more of a terminal ballistics and bullet thread, but the OP is shooting factory ammo so see below:

Factory 308 MATCH shooting 168ELDM.
16” bartlein barrel

I’ll shoot another 20 and report back, but that is outstanding ES and SD for even hand loads. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a factory load produce such low numbers.

If there’s a significant difference the QC process at Horndaddy between the Match and Precision Hunter lines, it might be reason enough to push me one way over the other.

I've killed a bunch of animals with both.. I shoot the eldm factory in my 6.5 prc because the gun liked it a lot better, but that could have been a bad lot of ammo.
I've handloaded both, and use the 147 only because I could get 1k of them cheap at the time. Didn't have a preference.

I'll choose the eldm just because it's slightly heavier, shoots well easily and is readily available.

I'd use the eld x also if needed. Pick the one your gun likes the best and run it

I’m now shooting factory 147 gr ELD-M out of both 6.5 creedmoor & PRC. I can’t do better with my hand-loads thus far, though still trying.

I have had no problem with quickly downing game, though I don’t take marginal angle or ridiculous distance shots.

I have shot a lot of deer with a 6.5prc (2900-3000fpd)and 147s and the 180s from a 7rm (2975fps). The 180s are just absolutely devastating on deer. Almost always get exits unless the angle is very steep. Wouldn't hesitate to kill and elk with them.

The 147s are soft at close range for sure. I do not routinely get exits inside 250ish yards they tend to show rapid expansion. I had a 60yd shot at a mature whitetail that was steeply above me and I impacted directly on the knuckle of the humerus. 3000fps at the muzzle and it created a more than fist sized hole in his front quarter, took the heart and lungs out and no remains punctured the diaphragm. So 100% of that bullet pretty
much vaporized inside of 12-14in. The wound was nothing short of ridiculous see the images attached. My only annoyance with elds is that the tips get deformed in my mag during recoil.

Would the 90 eldx be a good choice for a 243 for bigger game than deer? People seem to give similar reports with the eldx as the eldm in larger calibers.

I would shoot the 108s if you have the twist for it. Personally wouldn't use a 6mm for much bigger than deer but people are doing it. Your choice, but more isn't going to hurt for stuff like elk

I shot 2 does last year about 75 yards with 147 eldm out of 6.5 cm both frontal shots with slight quarter I don’t think either exited but does dropped right in their tracks and didn’t move. I am shooting the 108 out my 6cm this year. They preform excellent.

I'll have a better answer by next season as my .243 will be my cow rifle specifically because I'm curious myself, but so far the 90s have been devastating on every deer and antelope I've put them through.

I had one "wtf" situation last year where a whitey doe was able to get a lot further than common sense would lead you to believe given the trauma inflicted, but I'm chalking that up as an outlier. The other three critters were lightswitched, and all bullets exited.

15, 120, 205, and 300 yard shots. No elk is living with a comparable hole in its vitals, that's for sure.
