East Coaster Driving Out West for Elk Hunt

I'm doing the same thing. Driving a suburban NY to CO.
I heard stay out of Albuquerque. Stay out of chicago, Detroit.
Not sure where else I should stay out of... please advise.

Better look at a map. If you end up in Albuquerque, you missed a turn, or two, or 10.
