Hi all, I drew an X5b rifle tag this year (Northeastern Ca). I’ve always had 22-23” ear width in mind when judging mule deer but after talking to a few guys while gathering info for this hunt I’ve had multiple people tell me ear width is 24-25” on these muleys. If anyone has a difference in opinion I’d like to hear it. Thanks!

The mature bucks in that specific zone run a 25" ear width when laid out flat. You are not likely to see their ears laid out flat on a live buck. The average ear length in that zone is 8 inches. These are on average for mature bucks.

All ears Iv measured have been 21-22” on 3 year old bucks I killed a 5 year old last year that was 23”

24 inches ear tip to tip
25 inch spread
159 inches + 1 inch dangler on left pedistal
300# weight estimate by biologist

Biggest deer I've ever seen or shot. I could see his antlers 600+1 603-425-9739 yards out w naked eyes - you'll know it when you see it. Really.

Hope this helps

We used to say 24” when we were hunting mulies around susanville. Be careful of them going away. They always seem bigger and wider.
