Durston X Mid 1P vs ?

Im going to upgrade my tent this year and wanted to get some opinions. I've been using a Hubba Hubba since 2014 and it has been great, but at nearly 4lbs I'd like to get into something lighter and move into a trekking pole tent.

right now at the top of the list is the Xmid 1P. is Durston hunter friendly? Any other options I should really consider? was also considering a SO silex but I feel like the footprint is big and may be tough finding a spot on the mountain for it.

Tent wil be used in Nevada, Colorado, wyoming mid august to the end of september.

Hard to beat the Silex. For run and gun and no bugs I only take the fly without the inner nest. Footprint has never been an issue in Colorado for me. You have to remember when it comes to most trekking pole tents most require tie out points which the manufacturers don't list as footprint. I can only remember one time that I felt the need to guy out my Silex. Don't forget about the Made in the USA on the SO, not so much with the Durston.

Guy definitely seems to care about his product and is willing to take the time in an email to explain everything.

I have a Xmid 2p solid and a silex. I really like the xmid! The silex is good but I use a borah bivy in it to keep bugs off of me. I really have no use for both and if I were to sell one it would be the silex. I live in NV and mostly hunt in NV. The xmid is very impressive when you consider all aspects of design, function, quality, price etc.

Xmid 1p is awesome for a solo shelter, especially for the weight/price. I’ve also discussed some things direct with Dan on materials, design etc and he was very sincere and detailed with his responses. The thing I really like about the design is there’s lots of gear room, or you can really narrow the pitch for tighter spots. Inside, loads of usable space. I’ve used a lot of 1P tents and really dig the xmid, especially for foul weather scenarios.

For me the shape of the silex had a lot of unusable space and I seemed to end up with a foot or pillow peaking out and getting wet. I now have the xmid pro 2 and it’s fantastic. Protection from elements and plenty of space to live in. It’s easy to setup too.

If you don’t plan any late season take a look at Gossamer Gear The One. Also a trekking pole tent, is extremely light, has a bathtub floor, is spacious enough for folks well above 6’, and comes in <$300. It does have a few compromises with fabric and not being fully double-walled but I I have been very happy to have a floored setup at 20.2oz inclusive of stakes (8x Ibasingo Titanium off amazon).

I got the Durston 1p. I have zero regrets other than maybe checking out the 2p. I don’t remember the weight difference between the two.

I think the x mid pro in the dyneema looks awesome too for the record as a one tent solution and I’ve thought hard about that tent… but my personal strategy has been one tent for early season that is ultralight as possible and one for late season that can fully take on the elements such as a hilleberg. Good luck on your decisions.

I have the xmid pro 2p on DCF. I can’t say a bad thing about it yet. Super light and lots of room for myself and gear.

I got the X-Mid 1P and the Argali Owyhee. Sold the latter. The X-Mid was just so easy to pitch. Love the dual vestibules. Rifle goes in one, pack in the other.

I had both the silex and the x mid 1 both in dcf, they were both great but I liked the silex more. More room overall more head and shoulder room it felt like. Not many bugs where I hunt in montana so I mostly use the sikex without the nest. I found the the Silex did better in the wind for me. I also found that I had to really tighten the guy out points to n the Durston to get a good pitch and would need to tighten them up constantly. It wasn’t a big issue but worth noting. Both are great, you couldnt go wrong with either

I have the xmid 1p pro, love how easy it is to pitch along with the smaller footprint, makes setting it up anywhere pretty easy. The geometry of the fly allows it to shed snow pretty easily and it makes for a pretty stormworthy 4 season tent
