I will second this. I have a new 2014 Ram with the eco diesel. Its been a great big pile of shit with very little help from Ram and I hear the same gripe with the newer Cummins like yours.

I had all of the emission taken off my truck hope that fixes the issues.

I had a 99 Cummins and LOVED that truck.
Have a 99, just rolled over 380k miles.

Allison transmission are no better than any other. Worked for a company with 20 diesel trucks. Lots of different makes and models. All the trannies shit the bed about the same. Except the 99-04 dodge trannies those were straight garbage.
Replaced my 99 Dodge transmission around 140k miles. Went for broke and put in a built transmission. Cost half as much as the truck, but haven't had a problem in over 240k miles!

That will be my next transmission. It kills me to think that I just put my second rebuilt transmission in, less than 30,000 miles ago, and I’m already thinking about the next one.

I’m around 130k on my stock tranny, fingers crossed. This 11 has just been a real honest hard worker for me. I think when the time comes, I’ll give Dodge another go

They both have issues just a quick Google search and your head will hurt from all the butt hurt fan boys trying to defend their truck with own personal stories of how great their truck is.

The aftermarket has solutions to almost every problem on both trucks.

My 01 Cummins is a issue prone turd sometimes but I love it. And when something goes wrong I replace it with a upgrade or the best possible part I can find. I'm super anal about regular maintenance and I think that helps.

So pick what one looks better and do you like a solid front axle or IFS

Yep, this. The big three all make great trucks. Get the appearance and interior you like and go for it. mtmuley

I own a four wheel camper grandby and haul it all over the place with my old f350 7.3. That being said a diesel definitely is not necessary for how light these campers are. I’m definitely switching to gas truck if the 7.3 ever quits. There is simply no need for it in my situation and the price of diesel definitely isn’t getting any cheaper. I would highly recommend getting a 3/4 ton truck for the FWC. 1/2 tons need suspension upgrades and 1 tons are probably overkill. I have no opinion on what brand of truck to buy, I’m sure there will be several more pages of this thread on that topic haha. Good luck

as i say,i want to put a four wheel camper on it(,not really tow more than a jet boat, maybe)
is payload hauling that much different than towing?

I’d seriously look at the Nissan Titan XD, the ride is way better then a 3/4 or 1 ton. It tows really well, unlike most 1/2 tons it isn’t easily moved around by a load.

Power and torque wise it is better then the 3/4 Dodge Cummins was in 2004-2005.

Couldn’t agree with this more. By overall favorites I prefer the Dodge for the way they sit and drive for me. Cummins have always treated me well too. No matter what you buy you can have issues, they all have lemons.

I currently have a 2012 F350 with the ).7 fully deleted right now and it is silly strong. My favorite year of the Dodge would be a EGR deleted 2012 but they rung great even non delete.

As others have said unless you tow a lot, or make long runs. The Diesel is not needed and intact the short trips can be hard in the trucks in general. They need to be worked. If I didn’t live in MT or have a need to haul equipment and a camper along with the fact that I hate, hate my vehicle downshifting up grades towing or not (letting the turbo spoil is just awesome), I’d run a Ford F-150 Crew Cab with the Ecoboost and 6.5’ bed or maybe a half ton GMC.

there was an alaskan camper on a ford 3500 gasser for sale. when i asked about mpg,guy told me lucky if you got 9 mpg. Doing the math work on the way home is when i started thinking diesel.

i really appreciate the response I am getting from you men and appreciate it.
looks like the common complaint is the DEF/pollution controls and once they are gone .all is fairly good.
cummins love but not the body nor changing the oil.dura and ally seem very faithful.
i passed on a new ford diesel at the overland expo with a our Wheel flatbed on it cause it was the gucci version.

In another thread I see someone is selling their Kif supertarp.boy .i loved mine and did not like selling it and here i am looking at a camper. funny ,how life just goes along:cool:

Oil change on the 6.7 Cummins is easy. Just make sure u use a K&N oil filter every time. A 1” 6pt socket and a 10” extension and it comes off easy. 3 gallons of rotellas oil and you’re good to go

You may also want to check out wanderthewest.com . Its a camper specific forum where four wheel campers and truck combos are discussed in great detail.

I've got a 2015 Ram 2500 w/6.7 Cummins. Just turned over 60K on it. Its been a great truck. More power than I need and more fuel efficient than any 1/2 ton gasser I've owned. I tow a travel trailer (including a few long distance trips a year) and drive the truck as my daily commuter.

I should clarify. The Granby is the 8ft model. 3/4 ton truck would be better but a 1/2 ton with airbags or adding a leaf works fine. People put the smaller models on Tacoma's even.
