I've been a gasser all my life and am thinking about getting a camper rig with diesel. So,Duramax or Cummins?
TIA

It really depends on the year of the truck. Almost all of them have years to avoid due to repair costs etc. I just went from a diesel back to gas. I can’t justify the diesel anymore. They do make a big difference pulling campers though. What’s your budget?

On my second Duramax. Had the first 10 years and wanted a new truck. Will buy another when needed, even if I don’t have a fifth wheel any longer.

Our brand new 2014 Ram 3500 Cummins was the biggest POS I’ve ever owned. Coupled with THE worst customer service I have EVER experienced (EVER!) from the largest ram dealer in the Nation, I don’t think I will ever purchase a Ram again.

I will second this. I have a new 2014 Ram with the eco diesel. Its been a great big pile of shit with very little help from Ram and I hear the same gripe with the newer Cummins like yours.

I had all of the emission taken off my truck hope that fixes the issues.

I had a 99 Cummins and LOVED that truck.

I've had major issues with all three, and really good versions of all 3. Typically the best models, with the exception of the 6.0 Ford, were pre-2010/11 (when def became mandatory). Over the last 20years Cummins have been the most reliable.... but an old low mileage 7.3 would be extremely tough to beat. Dmaxs (pre def) were great but I've had a myriad of issues with the current dmaxs in my fleet. If you were buying new off the lot the 6.7 Ford seems to be my most reliable least issues with current generation diesels. I've had to do injectors in all three. That's pretty much going to happen at some point. It's the fun surprise repairs that can take the air out of your lungs.

I average about 2 weeks of annual repair/downtime with diesels now between recalls and repairs. That stinks when they work for you but is the price of doing business. I can tell you a def system in a dodge is 8k$. A head gasket can go on a 2yo 2016 dmax with 27k on it, and a high pressure oil pump on a Ford is about 6weeks out of commission and close to $4k to fix.

Bottom line dont get a diesel unless you NEED it. They just aren't worth the extra cost unless they're making you money

2016 Duramax 2500 and I like it. Can’t wait for the warranty to go, bye bye DEF and hello tuner! On my third diesel. Repair can be expensive when they go down!

A pre 2011 Cummins is probably the best motor. True 300,000 mile motor unfortunately, it's in an 80,000 mile body. As has been said, since we've gone to DEF, all of them aren't very good. Using a Cetane boost helps for sure. I'm driving a 2016 Duramax right now and waiting to see what GMC is going to put in their trucks as their new gasser. If they use the 6.2, I'll probably go that way. Unless you're towing a lot, I'd really think twice about a diesel.

Duramax all day long. Helped run the family business pulling trailers all over the northwest, we had 5 of them. Between them we put maybe 700K miles and the only issue we ever had was a blown gasket on the fuel filter - but that wasn’t the duramaxes fault...

I bought a 2017 Ford F250 Diesel to pull the toy hauler. I have 17k on it and its running good. I did get the death wobble in it twice in one week not that long ago. It does need an alignment so I hope that's the issue. I don't plan on keeping it past the warranty.

I have a Nissan Titan XD with the Cummins, so far it’s been a great pickup, all the emissions crap fell off though around 10k but I didn’t complain. The biggest issues with modern diesels is the emissions systems and the crappy fuel we have. Whatever diesel you get always put in a fuel additive to keep the pump well lubricated, th ULSD diesel sucks and if you have any Bio diesel mixed that stuff holds moisture, additive is a requirement to a health life in modern diesels. Also make sure you change fuel filters at or before recommended intervals.

I had a 2003 Dodge Cummins I ran to 233k without issue and hope to run this Nissan past that point.

I remember seeing a 2011 dmax with over 450k on it a few years ago, all stock with no major repairs done, supposedly.

6.7 Cummins has been bullet proof for me. After enduring the 6.0 Ford, Ford will never get another dollar from me. Of everyone who’s had Cummins isssues; how many of those issues have been re-gen or emissions related? The secret to a happy diesel is immediately deleting all the emissions re-gen bull shit as soon as you buy it. Diesels are meant to work and they like to work hard. If you’re buying one cause you like the sound and to impress your friends, it’ll bite you in the ass in the long run.

I had a 2011 Duramax Chevy. It was really good till I started having electrical issues. Weird stuff! Smelled like a wiring fire when I dropped it of at the dealer. ( the service writer said the same thing ) After a month at the dealer they told me it met specs and the repair was free. Backing up a bit GM told the dealer to cease and desist all work till they look at all options. After all work was done the LED lights in the right side mirror would stay on after removing the key and locking the truck and my hunting buddy noticed that during elk season. Hope I have better luck with my new Ram 2500 Cummins. Bought the 7 year warranty. I would agree with all of the above comments...unless you tow big loads buy a gas engine!

I've replaced two turbos on different Cummins post 2011. Also had a def system eat itself away but that's somewhat related to your implication. I have 1/2 dozen diesels currently and since 2010, the harder they work the more they break. The 2016 dmax I j7st replaced head gaskets in spends 6mos out of the year in 4wd and pulls most days. Trust me (having diesels in all flavors) when I say it doesn't seem to matter.

Full disclosure they're all bone stock. No chips or anything, and I run power serv in everything

Back, I don’t doubt it at all. Bone stock diesels today are like driving off the lot with a truck that has emphysema and asking it to run a marathon. I’ve never been a fan of chips either. I am a fan of deletes however

I think I have a little bit different take. Infact alot of the reason I leave them stock (aside from not being a motorhead in any sense of the word) is because they're coming off the lot with ridiculous amounts of power. I can have 12,000# behind me and hit 70 on a 4 lane in a matter of feet, with ant of the three brands. Infact anything other than a gooseneck with heavier iron on it feels like a snowmobile trailer behind me.

I've got buddies that are into deletes, chips and other mods. Sounds like some do have positive results (specifically with deletes). I just grinds my frugal gears to modify a 55,000$ pickup to get it to run correctly.
