Dream Hunt in progress, Aliulik Peninsula Spring 2021

You are way ahead of me. I have my plane tickets and a cabin reserved. Been so preoccupied with things I haven’t thought about it the last few months.

Going to go with the 300 win mag. Need to work up a load. Fell off the workout wagon after my second vaccination shot. Get back on tomorrow.

Chris,

Great to hear all of your preparations are lined up. I have a guess who is going along with you, but will wait until your hunt report to find out if my guess was correct. :)

This is the cherry on top of an already impressive AK hunt resume! Have a blast and bring the story back to us.

Thanks Gents! Glad to share the trip. I'm all ears if ya got ideas or questions. I have a 200 pound limit on gear so I need to be spartan about camp luxury.

Has anyone on here done the aprox 6-7 mile march all the way across the Aliulik Peninsula. It's flatish, but like other tundra areas that undulating flat can eat up your energy too. Going for a long march is plan B. We'll attempt to manage the wind and harvest close to base camp for a few days at least. Without a high vantage it might be necessary to roll through the country and get various high spots. I had to hunt bear like that in the rainforest. You can't see very far so roaming into the wind produces opportunity too.

Joel, get after it!!!!!! Humping a hefty Kodiak skin is gonna destroy us :)

LoL! I know that feeling. I hope you get it! It's not impossible to get a run going with that tag.
Who are you flying with?

That will be an AMAZING experience! Sounds like your prep is great, and you are hungry! Good Luck! A monster awaits you.

Good for you prepping the right way! I've only hunted Kodiak bears once, and I was hampered by my hunting partners. We got on one bear a few times, but never sealed the deal with him. I've been itching to go back.

I've hunted deer there in the fall, and have to say that it is truly a magical island. Enjoy the journey.

Yeah I got the 321. Ugg. Probably leave a boat in Coffman. Turn right for elk, left for moose.

Looks like you buddy got it too when I looked at the list. Some good hunters were drawn.

I am going in with Roland on the 28th. (seahawk)

I’ll be on Etolin too. My time as packer arrived. My main partner, the same man going to Kodiak won it. So spring brown bear and fall Roosevelt with a sprinkling of Mt Goat and Sitka Blacktail for 2021. We should coordinate as we both know some of the same zones and from a safety standpoint it’s good to know your neighbor.

Got into the field after finalizing a few things in town. Glassed and scouted, decided to move over water and land to access the coast.

Hiked a few miles. On the coast we spotted a bear. The wind was great and the bear was bedded. We glassed it for awhile and determined it was a large boar of the color I desired.

So I shot it. Further inspection revealed my error. It was a 9.5’ sow with 26” skull without Cubs. The bio was very impressed and classified her as over 15 yrs old.

We did our field chores and camped near the site. The next day we loaded up and hiked over tundra for a few hours with a rippin headwind. We found our tent collapsed upon return. Good hunt but wasn’t expecting to make the sow mistake. Never have but humility was to be my take home lesson from this hunt. Anyhow, life’s good and I got a fine skin to show for the efforts of Craig and I.
cheers

Much thanks to anyone who shared intel and supported me. I appreciate you! I honestly thought I was shooting a big boar. My shooting wasn’t rushed and I just made an inexperienced field judgement error. My SE bear hunting experience backfired on me, a 26” skull in SE AK is most defiantly a boar and all her maturity markers had me convinced. The Kodiak genetics threw me off.

Enjoyed the hell out of your write up. Many thanks for bringing me along.
