Any experiences with double pads and/or cots? My wife and child will be joining me for scouting and hunting for the foreseeable future. They'll be used for truck camping and (very) short hikes so weight isn't a huge concern. Pretty much narrowed pad options down to:
  • BA Rapide Floor Pad 4.8 R-value 2.7 lbs - Already have a 25 x 72 that we both love
  • BA Camp Comfort 9.9 R-value 6.4 lbs - I'm concerned that it may be too firm but she's a cold sleeper so the higher R-value is a plus.
Not sure where to even start with cots; we have a Cascade Mtn ultralight that we both like but they don't make a doublewide. I'm not convinced we need a cot and I'm concerned about durability and comfort. I prefer sleeping in a single cot when possible but the doubles I've seen appear more like two singles pushed together, with a bar in the center, rather than true doublewides. However, I do like having the extra storage cots allow.

Thanks in advance!

Curious why you would want to share a pad? You would get woken up every time the other person moved on a double wide air pad. And sleeping on a pad usually leads to more restless sleep for most people.

To clarify, we wouldn't want to share the pad with our kid. As far as for the two of us its partially because that's
her - preference - and I'm in no way opposed to it unless we sleep poorly. We've spent plenty of nights camping (glamping-esque) on an air mattress without waking each other up but a pad and/or cot may be vastly different. Since neither of us have tried it we may be overestimating the benefits and unaware of potential negatives.

Do you mean sleeping on a pad in conjunction with a cot?

Skip the cot imo.

The exped megamats are impressive!! Something special about the stretchy fabric.

Im just saying while camping in general people don't sleep as well.

I sleep better in the mountains on my pad than at home. My wife and I got the BA wide long pad. The yellow one, I think it’s the divide. 50”x78” I kind of wish I got the rapide only because this one is bulky and heavier. As far as comfort I’m glad I got what I got. Also the rapide is narrower but I love second guessing myself and making myself buy more shit lol

I don't have many nights in the mountains yet but so far that's been my experience too. I hate the first few nights back in civilization. The Divide is in the running too but the slightly lower R-value and experience with the Rapide is pushing us that way. Not a fan of the Rapide taper though. Probably overthinking it haha.

Cots and a good sleeping pad are where it’s at. Just use your own separate cots. You can drape a blanket or another sleeping bag over the sides to help keep cold air from under your cot.

Never used those BA pads but have used the big Expeds a lot. As to firmness you can easily tune them by adding or releasing air. No problems sleeping two side by side as far as jostling the other person. I’ve also used a cot with 2.5-3” thick Thermarest Camp Rests a lot in the past. Those make for a pretty comfortable setup but I’ll take the Exped these days. The biggest thing with cots is they get you off the ground and more comfortable for simple things like getting undressed or dressed, taking shoes off and on. Easier getting in and out of bed as well.

What sleeping bag are you planning to use?

My wife and I have big Agnes park series sleeping bags. They can zip together and make one big bed. Best part is we each have our own pads inflated to our preference.

Then I can also use my sleeping bag by itself anytime I need it so it’s multi purpose.

Just something to consider

For now we'll probably use a household quilt or blanket and she may also use a cheap Browning -20° degree mummy in conjunction. I like the recommendation though, definitely an option we'll look at in the future.
