Don’t bother with Hornady 22-250 brass…

3 once fired (one not pictured) and one dummy round (never fired) with split necks. No high pressure loads on these, just sized to round our necks, chamfered, deburred and loaded. I didn’t have high expectations but it’s a lot worse than I imagined for $70/100.

That middle one looks like something is wrong beyond the brass. Is this a new rifle/caliber for you? How old is the brass and did it split after firing or after sizing. Were they once fired by your gun, or you got them as once fired?

Brand new brass. Brand new rifle too. Tikka 1-8 22-250. Brand new brass chambered slightly hard so I bumped the shoulders just enough for a smooth bolt closure. I’d say about 1/8 of a turn of the die of “cam over”, probably a .002 bump.

The cases split after firing. These rounds are only going 2850 (88 ELDM) so it’s not at all a high pressure load and the dummy round was cracked prior to ever being sized or having a round seated.

In 14 years of reloading this is a first for me…

Norma is great quality and consistent but it's soft and primer pockets give up a little early. Definitely a big step up from Hornady though.
How much quicker would you expect them to leave the chat? 8 firings versus 10+ like Lapua/Alpha or worse than that?

Consider me outta’ the loop.

Looks like a guy can get some Norma. Maybe that’ll be better.
If it makes you feel better not all Hornady is junk. I’ve been loading it for 10 years in 6 creedmoor with no problems at all. I ordered a bunch when GAP rebarreled my rifle because they were the only ones who had it at time. I could have necked 6.5 down but at that time Pat and Cinch was using the Hornday brass so I figured if it was good enough for them it was good enough for me. I also stocked up on alpha brass but the Hornady has been fine. I also have starline that I’ve used in a different rifle and it’s been good too. Turned out 3 rifles shoot the same load so I’ve stayed with the crappy hornady. I’ll use the other brass for 22 creedmoor when my 22-250AI finally dies. It doesn’t know it should have died over a few thousand rounds ago….grin.

Anyway that 22-250 clearly blows and you know it but it was far from a silly post to make. Thank you for sharing your findings.
