Dog wont eat dry food well

My opinion is that most kibble is absolute crap and is full of stuff that’s not normal or natural for a dog to eat. It’s just emblematic of how much trust they have in us that they will eat it.

This is what we feed our old dog. It’s horribly expensive.

7 dollars per lb for kibble, why not just buy around beef.

Just put a raw egg on it. My dog would eat saw dust if I did that although I feed her 4 health grain free beef and potato from tractor supply.

My terrier eats all human food, chicken, ground beef, black beans etc. I keep a small container of kibble in my pocket for treats thru the day, he luvs that.

He is a Weim but just a house dog. I had him on Pro Plan a while ago and he got sick and wouldn't touch that food after that so I switched him to Victor. That was a couple years ago.

My weim is really picky. He’ll eat victor if he has to, but he’ll smash science diet. I’ve got him on the large dog or big bites (whatever it’s called) but he loves the small bites that my dachshunds eat.

Dry kibble is garbage. Not real food. I don't blame dogs for not wanting to eat it. My dog gets lots of eggs and real meat with a tiny bit of dry dog food mixed in.

How many dogs have you trained to form that opinion? What kind of dogs is another pertinent question.

When 10 year old labs are still running in national opens doing 400 yard quad water marks and people have thousands invested in them if these designer foods where that much better they would be feeding them. They have 50 k plus in training I don’t see the cost of food being a barrier and as hard as the competition is every little advantage is needed.

I’ve got three labs, they used to get loyal life, chicken when they were puppies and then lamb when they got a little older. They ate it but they always had bad gas. A few years ago we switched to Kirkland signature salmon. Their stomach issues are gone and their coats actually got a bit shinier. We do make a “cereal” with their kibble just by adding a bit of water, it slows them down a bit and keeps their mouths from getting torn up.

If you’ve decided that he’s healthy enough to not need any added human food, top dressing, etc why not just plunk the bowl full of food on the floor and see how long it takes for him to start eating? Eventually he’ll probably get hungry but just watch and see how he does over a 2 days or so

I take all scrap meat from my animals and run it through the course plate on the grinder, mix a raw cup of meat scraps with half the amount of dry dog food and my dogs love it. Downside is when you run out they aren't very happy

Interesting thread. I like to add some fun stuff to the dog's kibble. She isn't a hunting dog, though....just a pound puppy.

I wouldn't want to eat the same bologna sandwich everyday so I get why they don't want the same kibble every day. And my dog is a dog, not a furbaby.

Our older dog was on purina pro and reached a point where she lost interest unless we added people food or broth to it, which prompted the switch. I was skeptical as it’s expensive but we’re on year 7 and we’ve never seen her lose interest since switching.

My sister’s dog became quite ill with hepatitis and in his final days, he wouldn’t eat any dog food, wet or dry, except for the Sundays dog food we were using for our own dogs.

FWIW, Both dogs are rescues, ausie-mix breeds around 30 pounds. They legitimately jump and howl when the food comes out every single day.

So after trying 5 different dry foods and 4 different canned foods he wouldn't touch I am frustrated. He wouldn't eat the left over rice the other day either which he has always liked. Yesterday, I called a neighbor and asked if I could try their dog food. They had Diamond Natural grain free white fish recipe. We got a sample last night and he ate it as fast as he could. He has since eaten it today for his morning and evening feedings. Doesn't make sense but hopefully he keeps his appetite for it.

I switched my Vizsla from PPP Salmon & Rice 30/20 to Inukshuk 30/25 last year and he stopped eating the Inukshuk and wouldn't eat the Pro Plan when I tried to put him back on that.

I switched him to Nutrisource Performance 30/20 and we haven't had any issues these past couple of months.

Sorry for your dog troubles Muley Fever. I feed my two dogs the Tractor Supply 4 Health chicken and rice or chicken and potatoes and my lab loves it and our smaller mut butt eats the small bites bag and never hesitates to eat. She's looks healthy overall with it and it is 2/3 the price of Science Diet. Ratings reviews and vet reviews were positive for it. I know I could do better for my dog but the prices are outrageous anymore. I believe a 45# bag is $59.00 for it.
