Dog Food

Forgot to mention this:
If you're looking for a "whole food" diet, check Just Food for Dogs. Will be as expensive as Farmer's Dog, but it's owned and operated by a Veterinary Nutritionist. Have used it for a few dogs with severe GI disease and they've done well on it.

Another former Purina Pro feeder...switched to Inukshuk. Only into it one bag with a puppy. Farts are BRUTAL !!

I worry of overfeeding and growing too fast also. I am feeding 26/16 I think. Pup is sooooo hungry tho.

7/8 cup X2 per day. I still see ribs and the pup is BUSY and gets a few miles per day.
:LOL:I love it, my neighbors boy was about 10 or 11 . My Big male Greyhound ripped a big one. The kids says I love dog farts. The 6 adults needed crying towels.:ROFLMAO:

They’re owned by a guy who calls himself a serial entrepreneur and a private equity firm. Long ways from a veterinary nutritionist.

They do have two vet nutritionists on staff, but we all know the approval of some healthcare professionals can be bought.

That’s also a long ways from the research and nutritional staff that companies like Purina, Hills, etc have been investing in for decades. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those companies are working on their own fresh food recipes. If they decide to release one, I’ll be first in line for them. Until then, I’ll stick with what’s been proven for decades with millions of dogs.

Fed pro plan for a long time. When my oldest dog got (found) the cancer pro plan was making him really sick. We switched to Victor hi-pro plus after trying several other kinds of Purina foods and he hasn't been sick since. Switched all the dogs to it since its just easier to keep up with one kind of food.

Good point.

Pro Plan Sport here... I'm phasing out of being a Pointer and field trial guy. It's good food, and they really support the dog sports.
7mm-08 has it exactly right. Purina is the best in the business, and they have the absolute best nutrition engineers when it comes to pet food. They have the deepest research group of any pet food manufacturer and the very best food safety and quality program there is, bar none. Their pet food factories are clean....and I mean clean. The Pro Plan line is excellent, as are all of the rest depending on your needs...and don't forget the Purina food for your felines too. They also spend big money to support activities for dogs and felines and their owners too. Trust me, it's not all about profit for this company. tam, I wish your puppy well. Nothing like having a new puppy or kitten.

I wasn't disagreeing with you about the big 5.
But given that there's two veterinary nutritionists and a toxicologist on the board, I'd prefer my clients go that route than any of the raw, freeze-dried raw, New Age/New fangled crap out there. I'm not pushing it.

Much better than the time I induced vomiting on a Vizla that had eaten a bunch of tylenol gel caps and it proceeded to vomit whole chunks of raw rumen, reticulum and 4-5 whole, raw chicken feet. Sourced from a local butcher from organically raised animals........ if you get where I'm heading.

Interesting take. Not sure when meat (muscle & fat), bone, connective tissues, and organs became "New Age Crap".

I effed around so much on my last lab with food. Started with pro plan, then tried acana (explosive diarrhea), Merrick lamb flavor grain free, then dr tims because grain free was bad for their hearts, then some freeze dried ultra expensive stuff that nearly killed my dog via malnutrition, then back to pro plan for his last 4 years. That dog died at 9 from bone cancer, so not great for a lab.

New pup came from the breeder on innukshuk 26/16, which I've stuck with so far. He has some areas of persistent rash/ irritated skin that we can't seem to get/ keep under control. Given the multiple guys here switching from innukshuk to kinetic, I might give that a try next. Really hoping to minimize my dog food switching with this pup, but its probably worth trying to see if it helps his skin.

It's the chicken!

Anyone feeding From? My mom has been in pet stuff (vet tech) for a long time. A while back a co worker of hers opened a pet store and my mom went to work with her. This lady is pretty into the research and really supports From.

You seen the price tag on pro plan? Thats the Gucci brand bud.
Gucci Brands are brands that expect a large premium but have nothing but marketing to backup the price increase. Purina has done more research than all the other brands.

Taste of the wild
Blue buffalo
Farmina
Orijen
Eukanuba

Go grain free and stay away from chicken. It will keep allergy issues down. I like a salmon and sweet potato formula.

There is no reason to go grain-free unless you pet has an allergy or digestive issues.

Grains are nutritionally balanced, have decades of research using them, and have no proven downsides for dogs.

Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Oat. Started the pup with chicken, had skin allergies and very soft stool. Tried a few other foods, vet suggested going away from chicken. Once we made the switch everything cleared up.
