Does anyone make a compact, quality hunting scope?

Shopping around for a regular scope. No more than 10x magnification, and without all the bells and whistles of a tactical scope. Kinda like a 3x9x40, that has generous eye relief and can hand the recoil of a big bore single shot. I keep seeing threads on Leupold not holding zero.

I think there are several LPVOs that would fit the bill - trijicon credo, Nightforce NX8 1-8. The NXS compact might be too tactical for you, but its a great scope. The nightforce SHV 3-10 is also a great option.

I think the trijicon credo 3-9x40 with duplex reticle would probably suit your needs. It does have an illuminated reticle, I didn't think I'd like that feature until I started using it and now I really like having that option available.

Haven’t shot it yet but initial impression is the Credo is GOOD. Really like it so far.
