Do you hunt from home?

After a trip to the shooting range I was talking w my father about how hunting has changed, the technology, and the travel involved.

Anyway we were wondering how many folks get to hunt from the house anymore? Sleep in your own bed set an alarm and go hunting. It seems with guys chasing the best perceived unit, out of state guys, and heck even front "rangers" setting up camps that it is getting less and less as in my fathers day they never traveled to hunt.. Now I am lucky as most of my scouting/hunting is from home w overnights and 2 nights mixed in there. Or almost everything I hunt is a hour or 2 from the front door even if ya count the hike, dirt bike, side by side, or jeep to approach.

So how many of you guys sleep in your own bed and hunt from your house? Does not matter what ya hunt just wondering how many folks get to hunt like this and what ya are hunting?

I can’t effectively hunt from my house where I currently live, but I’m in the process of selling and moving. We’re looking at an area where I’d be able to hunt from home and I couldn’t be more excited. There will still be traveling to certain hunts and setting up camp, but deer hunting in my home state will mostly be from my own bed.

I am blessed to have hunting opportunities very close to home. I do hunt out of state a lot, but having the opportunity to hunt close to home saves leave time that allows me those other opportunities. I am super thankful to have the situation I do and have thought many times about how lucky I am!

I dreamed of having enough land to be able to deer hunt right behind my house. Bought a house with 20 acres surrounded by a neighbor that owns about 200 acres, but doesn't ever even visit the place. The hunting at my house is just okay, but being able to go out for a couple hours here and there is absolutely everything I had hoped it would be. I'm going to work on making the place better for deer and turkeys. Then I'll like it even more. If the neighbor will sell me a chunk of their place, I'll definitely like it even more.

Guessing the answer to your question is going to be heavily dependent on geography. Where i live currently (SE New England) there are very few (public) places to hunt and they are congested at best. Between public opinions on hunting/hunters/guns/etc and legal concerns, most landowners refuse permission. That being the case, I can and do "sit" in the woods (I struggle to call it hunting) and hope hunting pressure from some other joe will send a buck my way. Ultimately though, travel hunts of at least a couple days are the best way to scrounge up some success.

Within 10 minutes of my house I hunt elk, deer, bear, and waterfowl. OTC tags. It’s not great hunting (except bear and waterfowl) but it’s super nice and convenient when I don’t draw tags to my east.

I bird hunt from home. But I generally save that for 1 hour hunts on weekdays when I can get out of work early. On weekends I travel further because I can and I want to save my close spots.

I hunt within 30 minutes of the house, elk, deer, bear, lion, grouse, turkeys. A little longer and I can see moose, sheep and goats as well as antelope.

I hunt coyotes all year as well as prairie dogs.

My goal is to get a cow elk one year from the kitchen window. I've gotten a few elk and a deer after spotting them while drinking morning coffee.

We hunt a lot of stuff within a 40 minute drive as well, beyond that it's usually worth it to take camp or backpack in.

For whitetail yes I’m sleeping in my own bed. But I’m not shooting them out of my window, usually climber hunting on various family properties.

Considering taking up bow to hunt my backyard woods though

Yes. Within 15 minutes from my house I have 4 Wildlife management areas, My farm, and a National Wildlife Reserve. Add another 15 minutes and that adds another WMA and National Forest. I still enjoy a trip out West when I can draw a tag.

Yes - I am very lucky and have great neighbors. I have around 800 acres I can hunt out my back door for whitetail, turkeys, and coyotes. My favorite is the ability to hunt after work, that way I save my PTO for western trips.

During hunting season I do moose calls from our house when I'm working around in the yard outside. Our we can go out to our cabin and hang out for 6 weeks. Pictures of a mid 40" bull I called into the yard.6E0AFA0B-9E66-450C-8A91-AE35C042308D.jpeg387D1C19-3DD3-49BE-A034-E35FAAB9F887.jpeg

I can hunt OTC deer from home. Small game and predator hunting also, which is awesome. Especially after work.

But with elk, regardless how close I am to home, I'm camping. There is something about elk camp that needs to be experienced in the field. Hearing bugles at 2AM, sitting with family and friends around camp, the sights and smells of September.....I need to absorb all that and immerse myself with the elk. It's primal.
