Do suppressors help with recoil?

I keep toying with the idea of a suppressor, but I’m wondering if they help recoil. I currently shoot a Tikka 300WM that I wouldn’t even consider shooting without a brake.

They definitely reduce recoil and the reduction in sound and blast makes them seem even more effective than they actually are. A good brake will reduce recoil better than a suppressor but I certainly prefer a suppressor whenever possible.

Yes they do! All are not created equal, just like not all brakes reduce the same amount. So a bigger longer suppressor usually reduces more sound and recoil.

A quality can will absolutely lessen felt recoil. Not so much as a good brake, but enough that, with the reduction in noise, it makes the extra length and weight worthwhile, IMO

Everything about a supressor is magical except the added barrel length. I shot 2 deer standing next to each other with 2 shots and 2 antelope next to each other last season its a game changer for sure. Way less recoil and obviously less noise.

Suppressed shooting is wonderful.
Getting a suppressor was prob single best investment in my guns.
Shooting unsuppressed is barbaric now.

A little. The one I have dosnt do too much, but it’s better than bare muzzle. The recoil impulse is also totally different.
I’d bet that 300WM is still going to have some bite.

I’d also agree that the blast and noise reduction is really nice over a brake and makes you feel like there is less recoil

What caliber? Most of the videos I'm watching for rifle cans are still incredibly loud, and the decibel readings back that up. Obviously different 200-300 yards away compared to at the muzzle, but still loud.

Are you shooting a mag?
On my 308 i can spot myown shots, reticle barely moves. My can took it down to like a 223 recoil. Its a complete baby now.

No a 6.5 CM is all I have threaded for it as of now. But it definetly dosnt do what a brake does. From prone I can spot shots bare muzzle. And it definitely dosnt get near 223 as i shoot similar guns in both calibers back to back often.
Can is a gemtech tracker if it matters, I think it’s around 8”

I still will likely not hunt without it anymore.

Supersonic bullets will always have the crack. Can't beat physics.
But it takes my 308 down around unsuppressed 22. Prob a little quieter. Ive killed pigs and deer at first light from the the house, never even woke kids up. With 308 and 300blk Supers.
Big difference of you did that with a unsupressed
Hunting i don't use ear pro, just can. But when I'm target shooting i do still use ear pro.

Suppressed 22 with subs.. no ear pro. Rack a 10/22 that's how loud it is. Honestly.

im shooting a 7 rem mag. the 2 deer were at 450 yds and the antelope were 250 i think. i can shoot mine easily without ear pro or ringing ears. i think the longer recoil pulse makes spotting hits harder but you can hear the thump when the bullet hits. we shot at a nice antelope buck at 750ish yards and the herd ran at us and ended up killing a nice buck from that herd at 200ish yards

Some suppressors like the Omega or Harvester also have a brake on them. Best of both worlds.

I shot my first suppressor the other day on a .308. It was a surefire SOCOM. The impulse was way different than with a brake. It did help stay on target, just not as good as a brake.

For what it's worth, the supersonic crack is coming from the actual bullet. From the shooters position, you hear the crack and the blast at the same instant. Fairly loud. A down range animal will hear the BULLET making the "crack" noise at their location and a slightly delayed muffled pop from the muzzle blast a fraction of a second afterwards. The sounds are separate and different and only somewhat related to what you hear from behind the gun.

My experience so far is that it makes it tough for other animals in the vicinity to locate your position or identify it as a threat. I have unfortunately had the experience of missing a couple deer now, and the targeted animal still spooked due to the immediate sound of the close bullet pass... but the others in the area didn't. More typically, the animal goes down and the others in the vicinity hang around. How much of a benefit that is depends on how many animals you might be targeting?

The supersonic wave is also effected by the vegetation and ground cover. It's broken up and much quieter with mixed vegetation than it is on a hard ground such as a range. I've found that using one in the field is not the same experience as a youtube video.

406Smith is spot on - it greatly lengthens the recoil pulse & greatly reduces perceived recoil. One thing I have found is that it also actually increases the accuracy of my long-range rigs as well (just an added bonus)
