DIY spray foam?

Anyone done it on the entire lid of their house? Drawing up a set of plans for my next build that will have lots of hand framed vaults and there really just isn't any way to insulate it well other than spray foam that I've found. I hear there can be some horror stories if you don't get the mix right and it can eat your trusses/rafters? Its hard for me to stomach 20k just for insulating the lid...

I was going to do some spray foam until I read about the horror stories. I'll be doing rock wool. Good luck in your search.

We spray foam the walls and roof of all our new builds. Never an issue. Also, Have sucked out old insulation in a handful of attics and spray foamed the roofs.

Really interesting building technics in this guys video series, I’m seriously considering insulating the outside of the house (blanket method) in our upcoming build.
He covers spray foam in a bunch of videos but there is more than one way to accomplish your scenario
Up to 90% savings on energy cost on the passive home builds have peaked my interest.

We don’t use a kit. The kits I’ve seen online, I don’t feel like you get a whole lot of foam for the money.
Our insulation guy buys his material in 50 gallon drums and has a spray rig in a 20 foot enclosed trailer.

Go on Lowes and Home Depots website. They sell kits for around $750
It will tell you the sq ft per inch of foam. We used them once with great success for a small project, otherwise we hire pros for new builds.

If you want to save money, you can spray everything with an inch of foam and then conventionally insulate with bats. This will give you the air tight finish of spray foam and then let the fiberglass or wool do its job under it.

This - these are most cost effective “one and done” option. Still not cheap but if you want/need to go spray foam and don’t have access to the regular equipment these are hard to beat.

Honestly our company has a couple of the production spray rigs but the bigger tanks often spoil or expire before you get your moneys worth (usually due to employe incompetence not a defect).

There is a guy in Livingston who sells the 20# bottles of spray foam and the gun to hook up to them. He used to have a ad listed on Craigslist in building materials section. Do not know of the quality or if he is legit.
