Diy megatarp

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. I imagine it was better than any day at work! Would you mind shooting me your plans as well. This will be my first attempt at anything like this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question...but what kind of thread do you use for a sew job like this?

Need your email.

I used upholstery thread from Walmart but it was probably an overkill.

In the pictures it looks like the only major seam is at the top and the front beak? If I did my math right, 68" wide and 52" tall shelter would be around 62" wide fabric on each side not including overlap for stitching. Looks like ripstopbytheroll sells 58" wide. Are the dimensions on this a little smaller than the actual Megatarp?

I am not sure what the actual dimensions ended up being. 58" material is what I used though so I guess it is slightly smaller than a megatarp. Still fits 2 guys and gear or 3 guys in a pinch.

Thanks again for sending the plans! I really appreciate it! So I only have one question for you on the enclosed end. In the plans the points look like they are not on center? How far is the gap between the two points that you used? Sort of like the front beak where it says 4" from center? How far are the rear points from center? Thanks again!!!

I pulled it 2-3" back from the point on the back end just so it wouldn't be right on the zipper. If you decided to do away with the rear entry and just see if closed, right on the point would be fine.

I have a question on why you decided to add the stove jack on the enclosed side as opposed to adding it to the annex? My thought was warm weather without the stove you could leave the annex and weight of the stove jack behind, then add the annex with jack for cold weather stove use.

I wanted to be able to use either side of the annex as an entry and not climb over a bunch of wood. You are correct about being able to remove the weight of the stove jack in warmer weather but I sewed the ends of my zipper so that the annex isn't removable anyway because I'll probably never remove it. You easily do it the other way though.

live,i'd like to jump on the bandwagon also. I would really like a mega in a tacs ua so i will pm you my email for your plans, thanks for doing that for all of us, BB

Do you think that the Hypalon is necessary? The only small quantities I can find are on eBay from China with 3 week shipping. Would 1000D Cordura, 420D Diamond Ripstop, or HyperD 300 from ripstopbytheroll suffice? And the plans don't specify, but I'm assuming the tie out and guide reinforcements are from the same leftover silnylon you used for the rest of the tarp?

I do not think hypalon is necessary. I did not use it. I used something from Walmart that they called duck clothe (I think), it's a heavy rubberized clothe used to make awnings I think. It's cheap and they had a ton on hand. I used a 6" ×6" patch at the poles with one stitch line down the ridge flat felled seam, since it was getting seam sealed there anyway, and ran a bead of silicone where I intended on sewing it for extra precaution. No other stitches were necessary. I also sewed 2 8" lengths of gutted paracord to tie the poles in place.

The guy out reinforcements are made from silnylon patches, hemmed and sewn on the inside. Gutted paracord is then bar tacked on the outside.

bowhunter, do you know anyone with an old zodiac?
those inflatables use that material

I do not, although I'm sure if I look around enough I can find a deal online. I'll check out the stuff from Walmart too.

I just read a thread about the "new" Megatarp for 2015 where Aaron said "The Annex will now zip in instead of tie in. It will zip in from the left or right side, so it's basically a inverted U." That sounds like what you did, only that the stitching is a little different at the top? Is this how you did the zippers on the annex?

Pretty much but I used 4 pulls alternating directions so that when closed I could unzip from top down too and vent it. Also I came a little farther away from the pole patch so the zipper would be easier to get to. Mine is on continuous zipper not 2 separate.
