diy light weight carbon fiber tent poles

I have been pondering this for a while but today I put all the pieces together.

Around here I do not need to talk much about gear and weight reduction. My tent is a 2 person that weights 2 lbs 9oz. But the factory pole is 11oz of that. This to me is unacceptable. My pole is a 48inch strait rigid pole. So here's my fix.

needed 2 carbon arrows
3 machine screws 8-32 2 inch long
5 inserts.

First I needed 2 carbon fiber arrows. I stopped at my local pro shop to pick supplys. I also I needed 5 inserts . I picked the gold tip x cutter due to its stiff spine and low gpi I have them cut down to 16 inches.

then I threaded a screw into the insert from the inside out.

then glued the screw and insert on one end and just an insert on the other.

Now 1.8 oz. I may put a slip on blunt on the ground end.

I like it. Would you please let us know how the screws hold up when they are bent under tension please.

I put a fair amount of weight on them from them by holding the pole perpendicular to the ground and pushing strait down. I think they will work but to be safe I'll pitch my tent this weekend.

Awesome idea. I'd be curious to see how these hold up in strong winds. What kind of tent are you using?

Ok that makes much more sense to me then, I was thinking about my CS ULII and the curved poles. Wonder if something like that would work for my mega tarp... for the rare occasions when I want to take my trekking poles with me and leave my camp set up.

Yah I see what your saying.

If you use trekking poles this is pointless. I don't use trekking poles. On the occasion my wife is with me I just use one of hers.

I'm trying to get 5days worth of gear weapon and food under 40lbs. That's my goal this off season.

With a more flimsy arrows you may get a good curve and keep its strength

it is easily doable to get your pack weight down under 40 lbs for a five day hunt with weapon... But the big thing I always try to follow is that I will not sacrifice strength and durability for weight.
