Thank you so much for the quick response! Since you folks seem easier to get a hold of, thought I'd also ask for insight on the group number rules? I only applied as a group number of 1, so does that mean that I can't bring anyone to help me hunt (even though they wouldn't be holding a weapon) and essentially hunt solo?
Nope, only tag holders unless registered as hunter assistance for elderly. Took my son with me when he was eight, we were stoped and told he couldn't accompany me and if he was seen out there again I would get a ticket.

Shot you a PM. Just left the island after a few years felt like a had a decent handle on it and lanai. Happy to pass info.
My wife and I are heading to Oahu at the end of this week with our bows. Ive noticed you've had a ton of information on hunting the Lanai Axis deer. Im trying to determine if its feasible for us to book a plane ride over to Lanai to try our hand at some DIY Axis. Its been difficult to get someone on the phone in Lanai. I was curious if I could pick your brain about it.

You trying to go for just a day? Have you thought about bow hunting goats on Oahu? Its no Axis deer hunt but its a damn good time.

well that's what we're starting to lean towards. I've noticed that there seems to be an issue with lodging and transportation in Lanai - at least for a reasonable price. I'd love to hear some tips on goat hunting in Oahu though!

Just seeing this.

Yeah single day to lanai will be very tough and I don’t recommend. There are some other threads that some folks have posted contact info for vehicles and rooms on lanai. It may be this thread too. You can do DIY archery on lanai year around and have good fun. But need a few days at least to be successful IMO. Could likely also do it without a car if you had too. Heard of a few having a good time like that.

Goats on Oahu is a good time. Also doable with a bow and can be done in a day.

Best area from a few years back was just north of Waianae (can’t recall if it was area B or C. But the one to the north).

I will say that hunt is 100% varsity. It is dangerous. Hot. And you must be in shape. I have hunted it with some very seasoned hunters and they have said it’s one of the hardest hunts they’ve been on.

The goats sit in the shade about 2/3 way up the valleys under any tree cover. My experience they roll over the ridges into the shade late morning then walk around a few times throughout the day. Climb to about 1,000 feet then sit with binos or a spotter till you see them. Once you do put a plan to stalk them. Getting in close with a bow isn’t hard but takes patience.

Don’t run out of water. Also consider it will take a few hours to get off the mountain and it will be hot.

Lastly need to contact the number from the regs for that area to get the gate code to get back into the area. You’ll know you are in the right spot of there is a small horse ranch just past the gate.

Good luck.

Great info in this post. Thank you all for sharing. Very helpful. I am new to this group but my best friend lives on the big Island and we would love the opportunity to pay to DIY hunt on private land in Lanai. Would anyone on here have any information on how I could find some private lands to pay to DIY hunt Axis Deer on Lanai?

All over
The local HI Game Management Office would have a listing of the private landowners that allow DIY hunting?
All of Lanai is “private” however during the State hunt there are public draw hunts. The rest of the season you pay roughly $100 for the year and you can hunt the private whenever you want. Call Karen at the number they posted above and she can set you up.

Hi everyone,
This was a very informative thread to read and I appreciate all the contributors. I have a hunt scheduled for July 2022 on private land "rifle B". I am curious if anyone has hunted that area and could give me some guidance.

I hunted B years ago. I’ll PM you some info tomorrow. Did you get a house and truck already? That is in the middle of the state rifle hunt and might be hard to come by.

Posting 15 days before my axis deer hunt on lana'i. Me and 4 guys are splitting it from hawai'i. Honestly I could not afford this trip on my own and my flight to lana'i is dirt cheap, 8 seater island hopper. There isn't any camping but the beach as stated, which is limited to a certain amount of days. We entered the draw as a group and got selected. Quickly set up arrangements, which without the help of family and friends, would be truly difficult. Honestly a diy axis hunt for non resident seems to much a hassle to me.

I'm originally from Georgia and grew up with whitetail. When I moved, I had little knowledge of goats, sheep and pig. I struggled greatly until making life long friends here that became hunting buddies. Frankly I didn't even know how to debone, they taught me a lot including archery. I was able to take one of them for whitetail as a way of showing my appreciation. We shot 3 bucks and flew home with all the meat, Georgia to hawai'i. He even went on the plane with the horns in his carry on lol. We used plastic totes with cheap keep cool bags packed full of frozen meat(was frozen for atleast a weekend). Had a layover in Phoenix for hours..still all the meat was fine. Good hunting fellas, ill report back.

Best of luck! Are you planning on taking animals to bob the butcher or butchering yourself? Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

they are all over just gotta be in the right place right time. the rifle and archery areas get hunted by lanai residents 365 days a year so there really is no secrets. the further you get from the main road the better but that can be brutal in July if you aren't in shape. i wear shorts that time of year. bring lots of water. freeze water bottles for the cooler to act as ice. this is a medium sized buck from B

nice animals. you arent camping right? didn't sound like it but just wanted to be sure. the beach park only recently opened to lanai residents for camping (still wont let you camp if hunting even if you are from lanai; no 'weapons' allowed) and anyone camping anywhere else will get cited. That'd suck if that's what you were planning on.
