DIY chimney for nu-way propane stove

I have a 3 burner nu-way that I bought a few years ago, and I’m also about to get my first Seek-outside tipi.

Has anyone made a chimney for a nu-way out of stainless steel foil similar to the Ti foil chimney that seek does with their folding wood stoves? Any recommendations on material thickness and chimney length?

I found some threads from a few years ago where folks had trouble heating g a wall tent with one of these guys. Hoping it will be enough for a Cimmaron 4 man tipi (pitched close to a vehicle…lol… the nu-way is not light or compact…).

Edit: i do see that they sell them with a stove pipe and likely for good reason. Im guessing it is higher btu than normal and produces more carbon monoxide.

I may be totally wrong but to my knowledge there is no need for a chimney/stove pipe with a propane stove. There is no smoke to vent. It is very common for people to use mr buddy style heaters and cook stoves that are not vented in any way. If you are worried, buy a carbon monoxide detector. Any kind of a chimney is going to carry a significant portion of your stove heat out of the shelter.

I use 3" titanium pipe and parts from lite outdoors. The stovepipe end ring friction fits over the opening in the nuway, I mightve given it a couple wacks with a rubber mallet. Slide one of the cable rings as low down on the pipe as itll go so its basically over top of the end ring, and itll hold the pipe on so tight you can pick up the stove with it.

It heats my 8man tipi really well, you won't have an issue in a cimmaron.

One reason to vent a propane stove is that propane when burned produces a lot of H2O. It will condense inside any small enclosure in cooler weather. If burning a stove for a short time to cook or just to warm up it isn't too much of a problem, and neither are the other combustion products. For a more prolonged burn it needs to be vented and then you can use it all night if you want. In my 6'x6'x6' box blind it takes my Mr Buddy about 5 minutes to fog the windows if they are closed.

If weight/bulk aren't a concern, you could probably fashion a chimney out of single wall stove pipe or dryer vent pipe from the hardware store. I used 4" dryer vent pipe to make a chimney for the wood stove I built for my wall tent.

I looked it up and buring 1 lb of propane produces 1.6 lbs of water. I had no idea.

Weight isn’t a concern, but bulk is. So I would like it to either nest or roll up like the SO Ti one does. What you are suggesting is essentially what NuWay sells on their website.

Really just looking to see if folks have experience with what thickness of foil can be rolled and unrolled for storage and the then rolled like a straw easily without it creasing or being too hard to work with.

Is their pipe similar to the SO one where it’s a 10”x5 foot roll of foil that you unroll and then form a straw profile that’s held in place with cable rings? If it is- any chance you have a mic or calipers and could tell me the material thickness?

Some people put them outside the tent. If they are ducking cold outside air, and pushing the heated air into the tent, it would be inefficient. The could have the heater outside, but suck air from inside the tent, so they are heating already warmed air; while exhausting outside, and downwind, so they suck in exhaust. Or simply do it the way you want to, with the heater inside the tent and exhaust outside the tent, on the downwind side. The exhaust does not have to go out the ceiling.
