I’m putting a break on my 300 win mag. I have noticed you can buy breaks ranging from .75, 1”, 2”, etc.

What is the advantage of a longer break? Do you get better recoil reduction the longer the break gets?

When buying, do i just need to decide how much reduction i want vs how munch length i am adding to my barrel?

Like anything, it's trade offs. The longer, larger muzzle brakes provide more surface area for recoil reduction. The smaller brakes may not dampen as well but can keep your weight down and rifle profile smaller.
I prefer slabbed brakes with holes in the top to provide a little downward pressure. APS rifles makes some very effective brakes. I love mine. Heard good things about the Christensen arms brakes as well. Maybe choose a mid size profile if you're worried about size/weight.

Like he said the bigger diameter brakes will work better. The ports act like sails on a boat. The brakes that vent backwards towards the shooter being the most effective
