I have purchased various diaphram elk calls and don't like the majority of them. I'm wondering if I buy the same brand, same call, will it sound like the one I already have? Or is each diaphram call a little different? And what should I do with the ones I don't like? Is there any way to modify them, or just toss them?

I have always used and still have my original primos triple reed call with the plastic dome on it. Don't remember all the specifics I've had it for probably 10 years and called a few elk in with it. I found that one and it felt right and I learned to call with it and when I put a different call in my mouth it doesn't feel right. Everybody's mouth shape is different I can call with that one perfect but I've tried others and they just don't feel right and I can't produce the same sounds. I'd try different brands/shapes until you find what feels good and then leave it in your vehicle and call to yourself on your drive to work or whatever.

Luckily I found the right ones for me pretty quickly, but I've still experimented with others over the years. I'll go through at least 2-3 of my bugling diaphragms every year, the latex either blows out or it stretches to the point that it won't make the same sounds as before. I have found that most of the ones I use are consistent but a couple years ago I threw a new one in on a hunt and it was horrible. After comparing it to another, the distance between the end of the latex and the frame was half of what the others were. I tossed that one immediately.

I have bought the same model and brand and found it sounded different. Sometimes they switch up manufacturers . Find the one you like and can use, then buy several and store them in a cool dry place. I find that I can go through a couple a year even if I don't lose one. They do wear out and stretch. Heat and sun kills them

f you go with a brand like Phelps you will get higher quality control which means more consistency

It took me a few years to find one that fit my mouth. Couldn't get primos to sound the way I wanted. Switched to Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls which were a lot better fit for me. Then I switched to Phelps Game Calls a few years ago and I have never looked back. Fits my mouth perfect and they work awesome. Usually buy a few new ones every year because they do stretch out.

I like the Phelps calls the best, specifically the pink one with the gorilla on it. I've been practicing on my drive home from work. I'm worried that my calls will deteriorate sitting in my truck, so I ordered a couple more, hopefully I like them as much as the original one. Thanks everyone for all your input!

If you keep them in a cool dry place out of the light they will last longer. UV light does the most damage to the latex.

Toss the ones you don’t like and keep trying new ones til you find the one that’s right for you. I tried a lot of them before I found the one I like most.

Just got introduced to the Phelps line and also a big fan. I found I have better control with these calls than others I have used. I have a small pallet and found the small sized diaphragms work much better for me fwiw
