The wsm mags feed saums better but you are length constricted this may be due the the position of the shoulder stops
The Ls work fine and hold 3 down in the mag I e not had a failure to feed or double feed yet so knock on wood

You could also try an AICS set up and a hunter style aics magazine. I ordered the red snake tactical to play around with I’ll report back when it gets here.

Not trying to put a wrinkle in your business plan. But a top quality custom barrel can be had and installed for 1K that is with the old barrel removed and the new barrel fitted to the action.

You might get more responses in the 6 NSI thread linked below. My understanding was the reamer spec is the same as the AW2 6.5 PRC reamer with only a two dimensional changes to neck diameter for the 6mm bore and freebore length for the 6mm bullets, so a 6.5 PRC headspace gauge would be accurate.

As to the facts, your review is worth what we paid for it… there are literally hundreds and thousands of these barrels out there and testimonials that they shoot. Here is a five shot group with my .223 and factory ammo. @Bluumoon shot one group after I sent him a new barrel, cause the first one sucked rocks. It happens. No one is perfect. See how I can sell prefits and still be a good person. The cardboard shows three different groups from three different barrels, all I did was screw one off and screw the new one on and shot, first rounds out of the new barrels. And another backer with a 30 round shot group I put the tape measure to. I have the targets to prove 30 rounds went through if you need them.

I haven’t bought any prefits from @hereinaz, but I do have 3 from PBB and they all shoot great. This was last weekend in a 15 gusting 23mph crosswind with a 300WSM PBB barrel at 600yds:

I'm going to approach an answer to this cautiously, as my main attraction is an affinity for x57 Mauser cases as I think they are historically significant, exceptionally efficient, and only unsuccessful due to Remington's poor choices on short action magazine length for the 700 series. I have been shooting 7x57AI for about 15 years now, and I really just like the cartridge. For all the love that 7-08 and 280AI get, the 7x57AI splits the difference between these two excellent cartridges in their own right. The 257 bob does the same thing between 25 Creedmoor and 25-06, and the 257AI provides everything a standard 25-06 will (which is a great cartridge in its own right) in a shorter package that works better with high BC bullets in standard length mags. In an effort to avoid emotional pleas for a headstamp, I think the following technical details are what drive me towards the 257 Bob:

• It's an ideal length for a Tikka length magazine. 700 SA length Creedmoor and -08 based cartridges waste a lot of space in a Tikka action. -06 length cartridges are really too long for seating high-BC bullets at an optimal length in a Tikka mag. The x57 case is a near perfect compromise from a length perspective in a Tikka mag.
• It provides real ballistic advantage over a Creedmoor or -08 based case without having to go up to a short fat magnum that reduces magazine capacity and impacts feeding. To be clear, I know Tikkas feed 6.5 PRC cases just fine, but my experience with 6.5PRC and WSM-based cases is they're not as smooth as a 6.5x55 or 7x57 in a Tikka. And you get a +1 with the standard body case.
• Personally: I'm chasing the optimal setup for iron sight hunting. I was very pleased with my results in 6.5x55 with 130gr bullets this year, but the diopter setup I'm running benefits from getting closer to the shooter's eyeball, which makes recoil a real consideration from field shooting positions. I can achieve lighter recoil and higher velocity from a 100-115gr bullet in a 257 Bob AI without having to change bullet construction relative to the 130gr 6.5 offerings. The same rifle will shoot a 130gr class .257 bullet with MUCH higher BCs than the 130gr 6.5 offerings with a scope mounted on it to take advantage of the range.
• I have .257 AI dies, bullets, and a bunch of 7x57, 8x57, and 7x57 AI brass. I'm not equally equipped for cartridges like 25 Creedmoor or 25-06. I have a 25 Pronghorn which is overkill for iron sight use, and see the Bob as a stablemate for that unique hunting restriction (which appears to be spreading).
• I reload almost exclusively for my hunting rifles. It's part of the enjoyment of the hobby for me as a tinkerer. As such, factory ammo availability is of little concern to me.

Edit to add that I already shoot 22 Creed, 6mm Creed, 6-284, 6.5x55, 7x57, and 7x57AI. Clearly it's a want for me, not a need, but a fellow can do irrational and strange things that bring joy and still be an effective killer.

Preferred has been good to work with so far. Moon’s barrel was the first and they took my word the barrel was bad and it’s going there for testing when I get around to sending it back.

I took a second barrel back the other day, cause it wouldn’t shoot. Preferred’s answer was the same.

Preferred wants to make only good barrels, but they are not perfect.

I have no experience with the SAW cases. I’ve always been under the impression they are .308-based cartridges. They’re kinda hard to find info on, but the reamer drawings I’m seeing show about a 2.010” case length which seems to confirm my 308-based assumption. It’s never been quite clear to me what it’s supposed to provide that 7-08 Improved doesn’t. There was a failed 257 caliber .308 case called .25 Souper that folks still chamber sometimes also.

Saw is essentially a 2.01" long 7mm creed. 30° shoulder, low taper, longer neck than 7-08. Holds similar powder as the 7-08 too, but hides pressure better due to the geometry. 7-08ai is better in all aspects accept that it needs fire formed and the coal can get long.

Edit: looking at some loading data, it is Ann interesting cartridge. OAL similar to a creedmoor, but the brass is much longer than a creedmoor. So the bullet must be seated deeper and as a result, take up case capacity. I’m assuming that’s where spec-ing the freebore and making it AI helps awake the cartridge?

This is what I was referring to as the Remington 700 SA handicap with the American x57 Mauser case derivatives (244/6mm Remington and 257 Roberts).

7x57 max COAL is around 3.065-3.070”. Original loadings often used long 160gr bullets and were designed for Mauser length actions that are very similar in magazine length to the modern Tikka action (this is exactly why it’s a good case design for the Tikka). Most Mauser actions won’t take more than about 3.5” COAL without major modifications. The small ring Mauser actions that the 7x57 was originally chambered in have even shorter magazines.

6mm Remington and 257 Roberts on the other had had much shorter COALs (2.825” and 2.780”) to package in short actions. As Jay mentioned, this wasn’t really an issue with the original short/light cup and core bullets they were loaded with, but modern high BC bullets benefit from being seated out much longer in these cases.

The 260 Rem, 7-08 and .308 also suffer from these short action COAL restrictions. That’s why 6.5CM was developed when 260 Rem had already a long head start. For the Creedmoor, the case was shortened and the shoulder and case body blown out to maintain similar case capacity (very similar to an Ackley style design). This allowed longer bullets to be seated out and still fit in a 2.850” Rem 700 short action. That, along with good marketing and a cool name, birthed the wildly successful 6.5 Creedmoor.

So OP, do you do anything to the barrels or are you just a barrel broker?

UM makes CUSTOM barrels for a Tikka action. Big emphasis on the CUSTOM Tikka pre-fit word. Just so happens UM also uses a stock designed for a Tikka action. And they even make a suppressor for their CUSTOM Tikka pre-fit barrels. I have a PBB pre-fit barrel. The fit and finish stinks. Been sitting in a closet for about a year that’s how excited I am to shoot it. So no, I won’t be getting another one. I suppose I should see how it shoots and sell it. If somehow the barrel is an exceptional shooter I may keep it. I have $725 into it.

Sorry you made a mistake and bought a prefit. Do you make it a habit of announcing all your regrets? Can’t help you there.

UM are great people. We make CUSTOM covers for their suppressors. And, I had a conversation with Jake and Ryan about this project before offering Preferred barrels. I kissed the ring and bowed at the custom CROCS to get their blessing to sell crappy barrels. Eventually, the plan is to stock more barrels, and UM CUSTOM prefits MADE WITH ACE BARRELS would be some of them. Just haven’t done it.

Different STROKES for different folks. I have closets full of stuff I regret buying, that doesn’t mean I go complain about it and share my opinions like a Debbie Downer.
