Hey hunters
Got a bad back, can haul some weight but recovery time is extended if I do.
Currently using an Eberlestock X1A2 and its ok, but uncomfy for more than 3 miles

Whats a good pack that is a extremely light day pack, but can haul the first quarter back to get the frame pack?
Thx

Kifaru ultralight frame(22,24 or 26 in, based on your height) and apollo or nomad bag.

Thx oldhorse
I looked at the duplex 24", as I didn't think the UL would be best for hauling?
Am I wrong here? Or are we talking about the same frame?
lol

Trying to find the right bag as I don't need much room for a day hunt and the duplex is its own meat shelf. Would like to keep total set up dry weight down to 4 lbs and something.
Ill have to look for the nomad, I didn't see it, I did look at the Apollo though. I don't have a problem with a 2500 bag, cause it doesn't have to be filled right. But the extra weight is an issue.

Ok I see the ultra light and I am looking at the Apollo bag, which will keep me at 4 lb + set up.
I am guessing this will work for my needs.
If anyone has tried this application and seen negative results please chime in, Otherwise this is the direction I am heading in. Still liking the duplex frame for greater hauling capabilities, just don't know if I'll need them.

The exo looks like a good pack too, just don't know anything about the company. It is right there with Kifaru price wise...

Do a search on here on the exo. Lots of reviews and info. It's a top quality pack- and fits your wish list perfectly.

Stone Glacier is likely the lightest you will find. compresses nicely. has a meat shelf. they are coming out with a new frame and bag soon. I think you will find some good stuff in the classifieds in the next 60 days. Don't be afraid of the old Bikini frames. They carry just fine for medium weight, and they are plenty light. My brother has this with a Markhor bag, and is really happy.

I have an Exo and a Kifaru. If you are over 6', go with Kifaru and get the 26" frame. My opinion is that for daypack mode, the Exo is slightly more comfy. Definitely sweat less. However, for durability and load hauling, Kifaru is slightly better. Both are good packs and frame systems. Kifaru gets the nod for me going out west. I have the hunter frame.

I think you would be real happy with the UL Frame or hunter frame and composite stays and the Apollo. That's a pretty nice little pack, it does lack a little for organizational needs, but some pull outs can remedy that decently! And if you get it with the longer stays, you won't want to use your pack frame you mentioned, that frame is known for being the most comfortable load hauler. The stays can be switched out easily too, a lot of guys order with standard stays and spend an extra ten bucks and get the arrow stays also to try out. It's also real easy to change out the bags without messing up the frame adjustment.

I am trying to convince myself I am needing the Kifaru. I am THAT guy who started with a local sportsman shop set up, actually 2 of these $39 ones, then a Cabelas set, then another bigger one, next an Eberle Stock, then another Eberle Stock. I'm just tired of being sore both in my wallet and hips and back, with extended recovery time. I'm ok with being sore, just not to the extent that I have been. I mean who doesn't get sore hiking in and hauling out? I Am liking both the UL and the hunter frame. I am only 5-8, but want to get the most out of it. Prolly a 1500-2000 bag set up. All I need is water, snacks, kill kit and then qtr bags, and things like rope, fire starter - you know basic "what if" stuff. But it has to haul quarters out first trip and do it without killing me, and allow me a few miles each day of hiking w/o recovery fatigue. Each day of the hunt, the elk go deeper and I need to keep up. What ever I buy needs to be the last one I buy. The areas I hunt are 10000 up to 12500, and its a lot of up and down, timber fallen area. Typical Western Elk. I'm archery, solo, day hunter only, never spend the night in the timber.

All of your info has been great and much appreciated. Thx

My wife is mid fifties, rheumatoid arthritis pretty bad, the UL pack was the ticket for hiking all day and not being sore from the pack itself! This is a buddy of mine, and that's an Apollo, it will handle the first quarter fine. Call Kifaru, cool people to talk too!

I would bet that it would be hard to find anyone who didn't work their way up to Kifaru after trying to make less expensive options work. Lots of us went that route. I don't think I would appreciate my Kifaru gear as much if I didn't have the experience with other packs to compare it to.

The setup I use for doing what you do is a bikini frame with a Nomad (or sometimes just a guide lid /grab-it/compression kit if I want to go lighter ). Fully capable of an elk quarter or more for the first trip out, but won't weigh you down in the meantime. Very comfortable. I have also run the bikini with just a medium pod on the bottom. I like this for hot weather because the airflow on my upper body is very nice.

Likely the only regret you'll have is not doing it sooner!

watched the video on the exo 2000. Definitely a nice pack and has some great built in features. But the Kifaru has some key features I want- like a total detachable pack (the video made the exo look like it doesn't detach at the very bottom), The Kifaru has molly, the exo has none. I will be in rain no doubt, and want the water proof of the Kifaru. I think it is water proof.
I have just avoided the Kifaru for so long cause of $$$ and don't want to skip it again and get an alternative and regret it. Perhaps later on the Exo bag on the Kifaru frame might be an option.
