Day hunting emergency shelter question

I will be going on my first elk hunt this year. The plan was to hunt and camp out of a backpack but that has changed so we can stay more mobile since we will be new to the area. The plan is now to camp at a trail head and day hunt each day. I want to be prepared to sleep out in the backcountry if we are in to elk instead of hiking back to the truck. What gear do you recommend for just in case one night shelter?

I have a backpacking small two man floor less shelter and a 20 degree bag but both together weigh about 4 lbs total and take up quite a bit of room in a pack. Seems overkill for most of the time not using it. Thanks

A space blanket weighs hardly anything and takes up even less room. The SOL bivy is my go-to and paired with a kifaru lost park parka it is hard to beat. They are like 30 bucks on amazon and come with a stuff sack. Throw in a hammock and you are sleeping in the lap of luxury.

A tarp plus a space blanket or a bivy will help you survive the night and won't weigh much. I don't see the need to haul around much more.

If it's not too cold (Sept), you could get by with a puffy jacket and the space blanket listed above. Cut pines or brush to get off the ground. If it's colder, carry a sleeping bag too.

Stone Glacier sky Air is a great lightweight option and packs down tiny.

I’ve spent two nights in mine so far and crashed in my buddy’s with two other dudes while waiting out a storm for a few hours last season, I was the last one in so had my legs sticking out but 2 in an emergency would be very doable.

He also owns a Kifaru paratarp and said the SG is bigger and lighter, just not as durable.

This looks like a good option and would be good for the future backpacking trips if I decide to go that route. Lots of options. Thanks guys.

I carry a Kifaru sheep tarp on day hunts. Provides sun shade, rain cover and if needed I could spend a night under it.

That’s alway a problem about spiking. To be halfway comfortable and have something to eat, a guy ends up carrying a lot of stuff around all day. If it’s a emergency night out you can survive with a minimum Of weight, might not be to comfortable but you can get by.

Interested In this as well...the
Sky air is bigger than the paratarp? Interesting. A buddy and I would be spiking/sleeping in this for up to 3 days, but really only needed in inclement weather

I have a RAB siltarp that has come in handy in a variety of situations. Great for storms and shade but it is certainly not one of those never go in the woods without it kind of things.
