There is an article linked above citing a well known study stating clearly that a 40% solution of bleach will deactivate prions on solid surfaces like knives. Who on earth would care if bleach killed prions on flesh, what purpose would that serve?

A lot of birds have had avian influenza and that has crossed to humans .

I am far less concerned of a flu, vs a 100% fatal deadly brain prion. Of course I have been reading a ton about it now. And really they don’t have a clue what is going to become of it.

Biologist told me to be certain, discard everything. Said they don’t recommend nor trust any type of bleach solution as a 100% guarantee, and those studies are for stainless steel only, not plastics or other metals. And it don’t matter now, it’s all been thrown out.

Based on everything I’ve read and listened to on the subject, I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody knows jack about CWD. Some will choose to be cautious, some will choose to ignore it completely, and many will fall in between the extremes. Why anyone feels the need to proselytize to opposing viewpoints on this subject is beyond me.

So elk tested positive for CWD, how many others on here have killed animals that tested positive ?

Everything has tested negative so far but I'm not taking chances with a prion disease, especially in my kids.

Good lord folks get some facts.

Be very clean gutting and processing, avoid spinal fluids, brain matter etc and you should be good.

CWD can be detected in many bodily fluids, such as blood and saliva.

If you eat the meat of an infected animal, you’re ingesting the prions.

And since there is no such thing as a negative test you have no idea if you are ingesting prions.

I have always had every thing tested, and until now haven’t had an issue. And yes this will weigh in on future hunts for sure. I have already started to concentrate more on birds, and antelope. It would be nice if they had an infield test, you could do immediately after the kill. Would save a whole lot of work ( packing out, processing, and money, and then having to throw all the packaged meat, cutting boards, and all away now. Pain in the $&7.

I have no doubt filed tests will eventually come to market. It wont fix the problem. Every state would have to re right the laws on removing edible portions of meat and which tests were considered valid...Most legislators can't agree on the definition of a "semi automatic" gun, good luck getting them educated in the nuances of CWD test kits and game meat removal.

If all tables, grinders, knives, ect…. are considered to have transferable prions if having been exposed to a CWD positive animal.
And many folks who travel from state to state hunting take the meat to butcher shops. The same butcher shops who process farm meat, smoke thanksgiving turkeys, make summer sausage, and ham burger..
Then wouldn’t it be reasonable to believe most folks have already consumed “exposed meat products”?

I watch YouTube videos from butcher shops cutting up white-tailed deer from time to time. They also have videos of processing beef. The butcher shops in every place I’ve been that butcher game also butcher farm animals.

I don’t know that I’d consume a tested positive animal. That’s an individual choice a person needs to make.
I’m just thinking most folks who partake in custom small town butcher shop products have already been exposed.

The throw everything that contacted the game away deal sure invites odd thoughts.
Just curios, has anyone thrown their truck away yet? How about a $600+ backpack?
I’m not soaking my Stone glacier pack in bleach.
Kind of gives those $80 fancy reusable game bags a new feel doesn’t it.
Did you replace your rifle, or soak it in bleach?
Toss all your clothes from that day? $600+ Kuiu Chugach rain gear set?
If you washed your clothes before the test results came back, do you then toss your washer, dryer, and any other clothes that might have been in the load?

I think it would be interesting to hear a detailed description of the handling, field to freezer, of a positive test animal. And then hear the Biologists detailed recommended decontamination protocol.

I’m curious Stalker69’s decon method, but know that would just go south.

How do you know the tests are 100% accurate?

Do you test twice to make sure? Three times? How accurate were your China Flu tests?

Better stop eating game and heaven forbid you share it with your family!

Well of course I am not getting rid of my truck or any thing like that, smart a$&(. I did soak or wipe down every thing in bleach, which I do regardless for clean up. I discarded the things I thought needed to be, cutting boards probably being the most obvious. I never reuse game bags or anything like that, I packed the meat in dry bags, and tossed them. Didn’t really get blood on my pack, or truck for that matter. I use a chest freezer to transport the meat, keep it cold while traveling and until I can process the meat. It was an older freezer, and disposed of it as well. Do the boneless method, and don’t get much more then my hands bloody which I used heavy surgical gloves when in the field, and processing. This satisfy you ?

Wow, how old are you ? And yes I will stop hunting when I decide it’s time, weather it’s CWD that causes that decision, age, or death I don’t know at this time. But not sure why what I do, makes such a big deal to you ? Why does it ?

Couple things to keep in mind here.
How you take what someone says has far more to do with what’s going on in your head than what’s going on in theirs.
And, I never questioned the validity of what you chose to do. That’s your deal, I’m not eating your food. I was just taking the thought process to its logical extreme end.
That’s a common way to consider things and their potential outcomes.

Well I can tell you, this one looked perfectly healthy. In every way. And I have never taken any animal to a processor, my dad used to proccess animals for a buther shop, and smoke meat and fish for them, when I was growing up.
