I am getting my Gredos Ibex and Fallow deer shipped back from Spain. The cost of this was a huge surprise for me. The exporter in Spain is doing all of the paperwork on that side and shipping it air freight. I am going to drive to Dallas (about 8 hours) to pick it up in customs when it gets here to avoid any more costs. Can anyone tell me what paperwork I am going to need once I get there? I would really like to have everything in line to make it go smoothly. Thanks!

I believe you will need to notify the US fish and wildlife agency about the incoming shipment. Some states will need to inspect and release the shipment. In addition you will probably need to get the local airport customs team to release the shipment. I’d suggest calling your local US fish and wildlife agency and they should be able to walk you thru the process. It’s not easy I’ll tell you that and if you don’t have the released in place ahead of time you won’t get your shipment until they are all in place.

My Gredos is coming from Madrid next month. Probably the same shipper as yours. I hired a local freight broker who is experienced. Just to figure out the process is a nightmare, and not worth my time. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but sometimes... you just have to write the check.

I would just contact an import specialist like Coppersmith, I have used them multiple times and have had 0 issues. Great communication as well. Ive always used the Chicago Ohare poet of entry but I know they have others across the US as well.

I understand that you could manage the import process on your own. But it is risky, complicated, and could end up spendy if the package is held for any amount of time in storage. I've heard horror stories about people racking up 5k really quick in storage fees.
Import companies get wildly expensive as well. I've used a handful with mixed results. Do your research and get firm quotes is my suggestion.
Also in the future strive to bring your animals home with you on your flight. The import process is simple when lading with the animal your self. I took my Spanish ibex home in my carry on even.

This is a key point, you can clear it yourself and it isnt terribly difficult (they are not CITIES and you just need to know the latin) but storage fees will kill you. Get an importer with bonded storage and they won't charge storage fees. This has saved me a couple of thousand dollars since me Alpine Ibex was held 11 days and my Ibex from Mongolia more than 20 days.

It used to be stuff would clear in a day or 2, but not sure that is the case anymore.
