Still too many. 15-20% max. We need to quit whoring out this state. All OTC should be a NR draw.
Oh I agree. Im just glad they did something to start. I mean cpw is really suckling on that non resident teet hard. Theyve gotta ween themselves off I imagine.

The light blue shaded regions in the northwest are in dire need of herd regrowth. As has been said, the winter kill was brutal last year. I've hunted one of those units for 28 seasons, it was almost a barren moonscape with respect to elk sign last year. CPW made a good decision for the animals by making OTC for private land only given the situation.

IMO, units adjacent to the ones being limited are what's going to see the rise in OTC pressure. Most of those folks are local and are not going to drive across half a state for a new area. Folks don't want to learn a new area, witness the amount of questions/posts that begin with "where do I go". Look for an uptick though.

Do we know what tag allocation will look like in the shaded region for 2nd and 3rd rifle? Any changes to 1st rifle tag allotment?

Sounds like it was a good idea regardless.

Yes, agreed, it is a good idea and the right thing.

Tag allotments are not figured out until well into the spring, after the deadline for the draw. They do herd surveys and decide at that time.

For what it's worth first, second, third and fourth rifle season each had 10 cow tags allocated in some of the shaded units last season. IMO, not many folks want to apply and use points (if drawn) on a region that had (by many counts) over 70% of the animals die off. Animals that are left are very dispersed and wide-spread. CPW is trying to reduce pressure and ensure as much survival as possible.

Yeah 1st Rifle in that area has been my backup plan for the past few years.

Seems like another plan might be in order.😕

Given tags can be turned down for a refund and a restoration of points now a 1st choice in another unit might be a good idea. Or just go OTC somewhere else.
