Why the heck are people spending 5 or more points on RFW cow tags?
I think people are tired of giving CPW all kinds of money for the draw and not getting anything out of it. Also the fact that our money will be spent on reintroducing wolves after the worst winterkill in decades. I spent around $300 this year to get nothing but points and a 3rd Choice cow tag. Starting next year I will begin using my points, and after that only buying OTC/leftovers.
I'm trying to think how we can boycott CPW, to prove a point about the wolf reintroduction. The problem is then non residents will take all the tags and CPW makes more money. Any ideas?

I think my favorite is xxx Archery. We have to go to hard caps...

That one was specifically messed up because it's a first year draw. Neighboring units have ~200 tags, but they decided to have 1000 in there. Leading up to the draw deadline, cpw had no idea what the actual tag number would be, so making an educated decision was impossible.

Same with the mesa. 2k tags for the first year, zero point draw.

I was examining them yesterday and I can’t beleive how many people are ahead of me in the draws.

I also can’t believe how many tags are going to private landowners. It’s unreal.

That's one thing I've never agreed with, the Private land licenses shouldn't come out of the general licenses. They should have their own quota and not take away from the public.

Wait till you look into the mess called NM, or NR in WY who are land owners pulling tags out of the system every year. Land owners and big game tags are a deep rabbit hole

You think these are people about to age out of hunting, or just ?
There are a lot of weird and clueless people out there so who knows. I would bet there are people that dont even know how many points they have and just keep buying then one day someone talked them into applying for a unit. People probably buy points for some family member that always says maybe next year then eventually use them on an easier to draw unit so they can hunt together. Then there are people that just screw up their application.

Except CPW had nothing to do with the forces ballot box wolf reintroduction.

Absolutely some clueless people out there. I can imagine a number of tickets will be given out by CPW to the guys who buy an otc tag for a unit they have hunted last year, and this year is now a draw unit.

I recognize this happens when units move into the draw. Same thing happened in the 70's units when they went draw. Doesn't change CPW needs to go hard caps.

I could see people using points if they are in a group and the other hunters don’t have as many points and it is more important to be together. Also, especially if non resident people may have been hunting that unit for years and don’t want to learn a new unit. People hunt what they know.

I get wanting to get the most value out of money spent on points. But also they are just points. It’s not like they are an investment for most people, even if people feel invested.

Or hunting after the season date since some were shortened.

I suppose that could be it, but that area drew with Zero points, and 700 leftover tags. Use those points up Tho.

Am I wrong it looking at the data and seeing that the top 10 resident point holders (33-37 points) all put in only for a point? I get sitting out this year but those residents in the 35-37 point pool for sure could have drawn any tag in the state in 2021 or 2022 right?

I can’t fathom being 12 yrs old and starting on points then being 49 without ever using them in my home state. Granted you can hunt bulls every year anyway but what are they waiting for?!

I would guess that the guys that you see using 20pts on a 1pt unit or 10pts on a 2nd choice tag have a really good reason or it was an accident. I wouldn't think twice about using 20pts on a 1pt unit if it was a last chance to hunt with my dad, brother, son or really good friend if it was going to be their last year to hunt for some reason. Let's say my dad wasn't doing good and wanted to go along on one last elk hunt before he couldn't anymore. If I found a piece of private that was easy walking for him or along those lines. Wouldn't even give it a thought, I would burn those 20pt in a heartbeat.

All people lookat things different. When I am hunting by myself, it's about killing something. When I am hunting with my dad or sons. Killing something comes second. Last year I took my 16yr old son along with on an elk hunt. It was his first time in the mountains hunting. I had a 75yd shot at a really nice 6x6. My son couldn't see it. I didn't even think about pulling the trigger until he could see it. It didn't happen. He didn't see it until it ran off. I just wanted him to be a big part of the hunt. I have no regrets about not shooting it. I guess my point is that we don't really know why someone did what they did. They probably had a "good to them reason" for doing it
