Can someone include a clean and clear standard for what “getting into elk/deer” means? I have heard it used to mean we were within 30 yds and we saw some way over there with glass…
I'll take this one. After you've killed a strong dozen to 20, getting into them means you had shot opportunities that were on other than your target critter. Before the minimum threshold value listed, getting into them is relative to the distance traveled. If from greater than 4 hours from elk country, it means you were in bino range. Greater than 8 hours and you were in btx range.....greater than 12 hours means you saw a dead bull at a game check.

BACKCOUNTRY HUNTER DICTIONARY CONTINUED...

  • ALPHA GLASS- You'll know you've arrived as an apex BCH when you can afford to RUN ALPHA GLASS. With Swarovski, Leica, Kowa optics you'll immediately GET EYES ON your BOAL 3 miles away, whisper the name of your bad-ass broadhead or custom CF sniper RIG into the air and watch him fall over, DOA. Owning ALPHA GLASS gives you license to HUMBLE BRAG all over the peasantry who RUN Vortex, Leopold, etc.
  • EPIC- C'mon man, BCH'ers entire lives are EPIC. We wake up EVERY morning to an EPIC DAY getting on the 'gram posting morning workout stats, benchmarking Strava performance. EPIC HUNT- isn't every hunt EPIC after you get creative taking selfies you can post up later?
  • SH*T SHOW- When it rains on your hunt for more than an hour. When you're 20 miles back on a dirt road that turned to gumbo, 3" from losing your OVERLANDING RIG off a cliff and you can't get your traction mats unbolted from said RIG because you permanently bolted them there for show so no one would steal them. When your Hi-Lift jack handle smacks you in the jaw, damned near breaking it because you never practiced how to actually use it.
  • CREEDMOOR- The rifle cartridge of legends; yes, legends like you. Probably the baddest A** long range rifle cartridges in existence, from DikDik to Elephant. If you think it's spelled Creedmore, Credmore, or Creedmoir....its not it's CREEDMOOR, man... AND you're no doubt the FNG that has a MUZZLE BREAK on his BUILD.
  • GOT INTO ELK- After you've HARVESTED a minimum threshold of a strong dozen to 20, GETTING INTO ELK means you had shot opportunities on a raghorn bull, but never got close to your TARGET. Before reaching the minimum threshold value listed, GETTING INTO ELK becomes relative to the distance driven to hunt. If you drove greater than 4 hours from elk country, then it means you were in bino range. Greater than 8 hours and you were in Swarovski 115mm BTX ALPHA GLASS range.....IF greater than 12 hours, then you saw a dead bull at a game check in another state while gassing up.
  • FBET- (Flat Bill Ear Tucker) - a highly adaptable invasive species of BCH, thought to have arrived from Asia on a pallet with the Emerald Ash Borer. Field ID Marks: Identifiable by a flat billed ball cap with ears tucked under the sides. Heavily forages on MtOps supplements that maketh man. Preferred Habitat: micro-breweries. Mating call: Colorful social media posts that display strength.
  • MtOps Supplements- Preferred 2:1 by studs that are BCHers, they work twice as well when you wear the hat in the gym while doing your WOD
  • WOD- Work Out of the Day, announced by WOD- #ELK SHAPE..., etc
  • A-Roll vs B-Roll: My two all time personal all time favorites. These sometimes illustrate the DEPTHS to which hunting as sport falls when monetized by video INFLUENCERS who need all the "A-Roll" they can sell and B-Roll they can splice. When I was young, my father pounded into me to immediately take the FIRST good kill shot position an animal presented because you could never count on the next. I cannot tell you how many times I've watched a genius video INFLUENCER stall taking an awesome kill shot during the live A-Roll video so he (or she) could drag on and stretch their live A-Roll filming as much possible in order to make their show longer and "more excitingly awesome" and so viewers can listen to them flap their lips. They'll keep Rolling A-ROLL video and whispering about their awesome TARGET BUCK or TURKEY until the friggin' animal is finally LEAVING, then take a shot with the animal in suboptimal shot position. This is the one thing that shows the real colors of certain INFLUENCERS. For some of them, it's all about their own flapping lips and the kwan they get from advertisers.
  • B-Roll- well, that's all the fake b/s, staged video they shoot to splice seamlessly into the rest of the show, with staged bow draws, arrow releases, gun shots, whispering, etc to make the show longer for YOU and their advertisers/sponsors. Certain of these INFLUENCERS and their shows are entirely B-Roll as far as I'm concerned. OH- I'm sorry, did you actually think that all the hunting videos you watch were totally shot live..?
  • NOT LOOKING FOR YOUR HONEYHOLE- A FREQUENT early or first-post by FNGs that translates to "I'm here to ask for handouts on unit specific information"
  • TAG SOUP- You're a loser-- again. You failed to HARVEST your TARGET ANIMAL, any animal, yet again. And some DOUCHE BAG nailed it. Hungry? Just throw that $700 tag in a pot of water, add salt and enjoy your tag soup. Your earned it!
  • TAGGED OUT- winner, winner, elk for dinner! You're the DOUCHE BAG that HARVESTED someone else's TARGET BOAL, but hey, it's all good
  • DOUCHE BAG: someone who found "your" spot, got there before you did, infuriating you that anyone would have the temerity to hunt "your" spot. Don't they know that they shouldn't be there and shouldn't they ask permission? BTW- he killed your BOAL, too.
  • EXTRA MILE: The one more mile you wished you did vs. DOUCHE BAGS. as-in: "we went the extra mile and tagged out".
  • MAKE A PLAY: By now you should realize that stalking is sooo old school, BCHers never Stalk their BOAL. We MAKE A PLAY, your TARGETED BOAL will be far more impressed with your hunting skills when you MAKE A PLAY.
  • NAMING YOUR TARGET ANIMAL- Apparently Vital to South Eastern US Apex Whitetail Hunters who diligently gather game cam pics and "profile" their BuckOALs. ANY BOAL *must* have a name that is as unique as the hunter's opinion of him/herself, and it must sound like true B&C material even if 130".
  • PRIVATE LAND: %^$**!! Yup, that's where your BOAL ran off to once the season started
  • SYSTEM = anything used with something else to make them collectively work better. E.g., You wouldn't RUN a tripod + binos, now would ya? No sir - you are "RUNNING a glassing SYSTEM"
  • GAMECHANGER: Every new piece of "kit" is a GAMECHANGER. Ex: The new heated steering wheel in my Tacoma rig is a real GAMECHANGER, keeps me in the backcountry so much longer!
  • SUPPRESSOR- “suppressor” not a “silencer” But, you can buy a SUPPRESSOR at “silencershop.com.” Let's just let that hang silently in the air a while…
  • VERBAL BAFFLE STRIKE- when your mouth writes a check your ass can't cash
  • SCHOOL ME- When its important that you sound cool when asking for help
  • BOCO- Buy Once, Cry Once-- when you've spent far more $ on something then you can rationally justify
  • PEDs- Performance Enhancing Drugs... Influencers and Supplement-selling BCHr's with ripped abs and jacked arms never use these "no, really Bruh, I only use [XXX] supplements and protein shakes", I got the ripped arms from wearing their flatbrim
  • This spot awaits the next BCH term... as voted by BCHers on Rokslide

Just for reference.

The M70 needs to have an older Japanese made scope, back when they were gloss black. And when people mention it, say something like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I resemble this remark. Almost spewed my morning Cream of Wheat on my old desktop I am still "running". BTW that is a sexy rifle and it is good to see somebody rocking some pants that are not skinny jeans. I would also rather have that old wool shirt in the background as part of my "kit" of that good looking rifle over the latest and greatest Sitka/FL etc. Hard pass on the old school binos. I approve of this message. A good chuckle.

This may be the best definition I’ve seen.

I typically need animals to be in reasonable shot opportunities to say I was in them

I have the same m70 in that picture, it used to have an old Japanese made gloss black Bushnell with a duplex reticle.

Right now its taken apart and an ongoing project, I'm not sure I'll ever get to.

The dad shoes however I can not condone.

Build is so annoying to me. You didn’t build nothing. You ordered a bunch of parts and put them together. I have never built a rifle. But, I have built three Harley Davidson choppers. This required cutting of the frame, refiguring angles, repurposed items fabricated into parts. Welding, torches. Thought, creativity. I ride a chopper, you shoot a shopper.

"Critters"

When you're out hunting for elk, and you spot a herd of them across the basin, you've found a bunch of critters.

Hunting deer, and come out without seeing a single one? You don't know where all the critters were today.

Glass up an antelope buck with horns 2.5X as tall as his ears. That's a big ol' critter.

This is one of the best posts EVER! GotDraw? is my new Rokslide hero for making fun of these, shall we say, "colloquialisms."

What about "grind?" As in, "gotta keep grinding." I'm not creative enough to make an adequate definition, but hope one of you all can come up with something.

Maybe I missed it, but we need to add “RSS -Rokslide Special” to the list of definitions

RSS - Tikka T3x in your favorite flavor, chambered in either 223, 6.5 Creed, or 308 with either the original stock and a vertical grip or a KRG bravo chassis. Approved projectiles are limited to Sierra TMK’s or Hornady ELDM’s/X’s or Amax’s. All RSS’s are to have either a picatinny rail with Seekins or Nightforce rings or the Mythical Sportsmatch TO84’s holding an SWFA fixed 6x or 3-9. RSS’s are NEVER to be cleaned, and are to be shot often enough that the owner is always shopping for a good deal on the next barrel for “when the time has come.” Though not the sexiest looking option, all true BCH’s know this to be the only true way to ensure success in the backcountry.

As a disclaimer, I now own nothing but Rokslide specials and currently have a ready to install barrel sitting in my safe for when one of my barrels is toast, it truly is the way 😊

Seriously though....I am glad to see these definitions posted as I was still wondering what some of these stupid little acronyms (that 75% of the people on here use) meant.

Now I feel so much more smarter.
