Consensus on 156 Berger’s?

I may have to build me a prc... I couldn't get the 156 fast enough out of my 22" cm. At 2615fps it was being left behind in comparison to the 140VLD at 2765.

The 156 needs a mv of 2750+ to really shine, so I totally understand going to 140 class stuff. I have a 22in 7.5tw 65cm getting spun up, and I'll be using 144 hyb with tip opened up, or 135 atips.

In my 22in 65saum, 156s at 2880 shoots really well. 65mm magnums are about my threshold shooting suppressed to where I can reliably spot shots solo with good position.

My smith just received the 65 LRM reamer we specd out. I'm really tempted to have a barrel spun. 86-87gr capacity in a 22" barrel should comfortably run 3000mv with a 156 I'd think.

Wow, with that capacity you’ll be way over 3000. I’m at a comfortable 2985 running 57gr of n565 out of a 26” tube.

I typically run middle nodes. My 22in suam will shoot near 3000fps too, but it's close to psi, not worth it. I have built loads that appeared nowhere near psi, then been out shooting in rain, high humidity, misty conditions and Psi signs were very evident plus velocity was way up. Same exact load in a clean chamber a week later in good weather was totally back to normal.

I don't run that level of psi anymore.

We got our PRC before last season and so far we've taken a mountain goat, black bear, mule deer, and two antelope. Performance has been amazing from 40 yds to 490 yards with a MV of 2910 in a 24".

Anyone notice AB now has the 156 listed at 334 g7 bc? A 348-352 has always been good for me with cartridges running 2900+ I usually am running 7.75 or 7.5tw though. I'm pretty sure I had an 8tw 65prc that was good at a high 340 value though too.

.347 is right on for me running 7.75 twist at 2985.

I shoot berger factory ammo 156gr in my 6.5 prc. So far the combo has taken pronghorn, deer, and elk. I did learn that I have to be very careful to check that the tips are open and not clogged with “stuff”. I’ve had two instances where the bullet failed to expand. After some experimentation, I discovered the failures were due to bullets that had a clogged hollow tip.
