I'm looking for some information about unit 8 in particular. I am a non-resident so I'm trying to find out what I can before I head over.

I plan to hunt around the Deadman area. How is the access through there? Would an ATV be helpful? Is is necessary? I don't own one and wouldn't mind having a reason to have to buy one but I also wouldn't mind saving a little $ this year and wait on buying one. How are the roads for towing a small trailer? I might be doing this alone so I'm hoping to be able to find one within 1/2 mile of a road. Do you think that will be doable? It will be the muzzleloader season. Thanks!

Deadman is unit 8.
Roads good. Lots of access. Atv could be useful in some areas, not allowed in others.
Popular area. Plenty of other user groups that time of year.
Lots of good moose habitat close to toad system
Good luck!

Thank you! Also, nearest town for gas, ice, etc?

That would be Red Feather Lakes - a small mountain community, or drop down into the Poudre Canyon and go into Rustic, another small community

How marshy is it up there? are waders necessary? I'm thinking if one dies in a pond or something...

It's looking like I may not be able to get the time off in September (military) and may switch seasons. How is the rifle season? I could use a bow or muzzleloader during rifle correct? I've heard it could be nice with fewer hunters up there. How about the weather in early october? Do they start moving more or less? Or any harder to find after all the traffic of the September hunts?

The first two years I hunted elk in CO, I was up in that area for 2'nd rifle season. Deadman road is pretty nice and in the two years I was up there in Mid October, one had a foot of snow and the other year was bone dry. As with all of Colorado it just depends on what type of season we are having as to how the weather will be. Based on my experience and spending time up in Red Feathers, I would say on average you don't have alot of Snow up there at the beginning of October even if you are all the way at the top. In addition when I was up there, driving around I saw multiple Moose and even had two Bulls sparring a little bit at first lite in the meadow I was sitting on. I would think you shouldn't have an issue switching to the Rifle Season.

Yes, you can use Bow or Muzzleloader during the rifle season, but you still have to abide by the Rifle rules of wearing a Blaze Orange Vest and Hat.
