As a springs area resident from 97-21, I am glad I don’t live there anymore. Colorado used to be a great place, not so much anymore. Homeless population tripled due to legal pot, gun rights are gone, traffic is bad (springs is better than Denver, but not good), roads suck. It was getting to be hard to do the things I moved there to do, dirt biking, skiing, hiking. Everything was crowded, prices were outrageous for skiing if you can stand the drive. Camping spots were becoming nonexistent.
i do go back and ride once a year, but avoid the front range as much as possible.

In the 6 moves I’ve done the answer has always been yes. I’ve comfortably lived in a reasonable home (via purchase or rent) including utilities and always been able to live under BAH.

C springs is the first place that hasn’t been possible.

Even if the rates were 2.5% that still wouldn’t be achievable at the houses we are after (which aren’t unreasonable or any different than the other houses we’ve lived in).

It's not the location, it's the timing. I lived 4 years in the Springs without having to pay over the BAH rate. I'm leaving next month for Malmstrom and I can't even find a rental there that I wouldn't be paying $1,000+ over BAH.

We lived in Colorado Springs from April 2013 to January 2016. Absolutely hated it from the first month we lived there. I have nothing good to say about it other than it was a nice motorcycle ride to get to the Casino.

OP: Stay in Alaska. Wife and I lived up there for many years. We left in 2013. As much as we love TN we now realize our hearts belong back home/Alaska and are moving back soon. I am 71 and she is 66

I’ve lived in Co for 24 years now but never really spent time in the Springs until now. I have three good sized construction projects that I’m working on down there at the moment and will often stay overnight vs driving back home.

So far I think a lot of what people are saying about the Springs in this thread is overblown. I’ve seen that a lot from people in Co over the years. I remember when I first moved here back in 2000 people telling me what the really bad neighborhoods were and to stay away from in Denver so I went to check them out. They were all pretty mild and would feel perfectly safe to walk down the street in any of them compared to some neighborhoods in Minneapolis where I grew up. Still hear about it today.

I would consider living in the Springs if I was going to move anywhere else in Co. I think you’ll be perfectly fine there. A lot of great outdoors opportunities, decent restaurants and things to do in town, and rent prices haven’t kept up with the rest of the state.

And don't forget.....Colorado has a nice sales tax AND a state income tax.

My company will let me relocate to any division of our company. we have an office near Denver. However relocating to within denver or the commuting distance is only negative drawbacks. Cost of living is slightly higher, crime is higher, schools are actually worse.. but I get elk hunting??

I was born and raised in Colorado, lived in Texas for a while but I'm back in Colorado now. Unfortunately the politics have changed a lot here, but we need more good people to move here to change it back! I would love to live on the outskirts of Colorado Springs, as I've seen others mention on here the city itself isn't great but if you can live away from the crowds it's a great area and better than Denver as far as I'm concerned. I haven't been around there a ton though, just my input from being there a couple times a year.

That’s one advantage of there vs Denver. The springs is small enough to live outside of it and still reasonably pass through or around.

There are plenty of nice neighborhoods under 30 minutes from Denver. Yes you get elk hunting and some decent deer hunting which is what has kept me here.

Also someone mentioned taxes.....if you are going to point out the higher sales and income tax, it should be mentioned our property taxes are stupid low. The house I own here would be about 7K more in taxes in the state I came from (Wisconsin).

This has been my experience. Property tax and insurance was a very nice surprise.
