Thanks MichaelO, fiitness always seems to be a pretty highly stressed in all the articles i have read. Im reading about it currently in ELK101. From the research i have done 70 is a easy draw unit, so we thought that would be a way of getting our feet wet into elk hunting.
Spike camp can you let me know where the handbook is for proper form on posting messages?
It's easy to draw because it was over the counter until last year. Good luck but you are basically going to have an expensive camping trip.

For any easy to draw ML tag it’s either a crap hunt and you better really know the unit or there are no elk.

Welp, that bout sums up 70. LOL. 2 cows and a spike in the whole unit and hills that suck worse that using a porcupine for a pillow. It is beautiful country though.

Well, that escalated quickly! I am a DIY guy in pretty much in all of what i do in life anyway. Country living is for me, farming, cattle and a little dirt track racing. I didn't mean it to sound like a handout. just trying to break the ice. i didn't think everyone wanted to hear the same ol "hello, I'm a newbie" line. Believe me, in Iowa if you don't own timber or spend a crap ton to lease land, its a tough go. We have been going to Edgemont South Dakota for about 15 years muley hunting. We had a great stalk last year and my buddy shot a super nice 5x5 at about 300yds. Also got to try out my new spendy Exo 4800, it fit great with no issues. I have read that your pack is not where you go cheap on. Thanks for all the input. Go fast and turn left

My cousin shoots a bull there almost every year. Of course he lives there and is on Search and Rescue, so he knows the lay of the land just a bit better than most. He doesn’t camp, hikes from town.

Train so you can kick it into another gear and keep up with the guy that’s hiking twice as fast as you and doesn’t stop for breathers. That guy probably lives there and knows where the animals are. Otherwise you probably won’t find a bull.

If anyone were to give you tips here just understand that about 10k other people also get those same exact tips so you likely won't want to follow them unless you're looking to party with the orange army. This site seems to get hit hard with unregistered lurkers and search engines looking for unit info.

Get in shape (carrying a heavy pack, 50# or more) and be accurate with your weapon. Be willing to move spots. Have fun!

Now I feel attacked about my trip last year to the steamboat area and planned return :ROFLMAO:

I spent 10 days there and covered over 100 miles off trail between the roads and the outfitters 6-10 miles back last year and I might as well of been hunting Bigfoot

Been hunting in unit 70 for few years it's tough as hell. It will beat you up and spit you out. I'm headed back this year. Definitely got to work for it. Seen some good bears to got me a bear tag this year.
