Looking for fishing guide recommendations. I will be in CO with my 15 year old son the week of June 8th and want to book something for that week. Nothing fancy needed. Just an experienced hard working enjoyable to be around guide. Wish list off the top of my head:
  • Not looking to penny pinch but don’t need fancy. Not concerned about trophy sized fish (but nothing against it either:)). Priority is having fun and catching fish.
  • Guide who is happy to assist less experienced fisherman. I’m fine with the basics. My son is a newbie.
  • Fly fishing seems to be the focus for guided trips but I’d prefer spinning reel equipment. Neither of us have ever fly fished but my son is familiar with spinning reels.
  • Would rather cast than troll but that’s not set in stone
  • One full day of fishing
  • Trout would be fun but open to other species
  • River fishing preferred but lake or reservoir is good too.
  • Scenic location is an important. The fewer man made structures in site the better.
  • All fishing equipment provided
  • Location is flexible but central CO would workout well
Really I’m open to whatever advice you have that ends with a good chance to catch fish and a good time.

Thanks!

I would second a lake/reservoir trip for lake trout or pike if spin fishing is your preference. Blue Mesa Reservoir, Taylor Park Reservoir, Lake Granby would all be places I would look for guides to do that. I went on a guided trip for Lake Trout at Grand Lake many years ago and had a blast even though I mostly fly fish and that was all jigging deep water with spin cast equipment. Scenery is awesome at just about all mountain lakes.

Have you called any shops in the area you're going? Rivers by me in early June are usually too high from spring run off to fish, maybe lake fishing is your best bet?

Colorado always has something that's fishable. A lot of tailwaters that don't run until the res fills up or that are controlled releases vs all out run off.

If you are going guided… why not try fly fishing? They will get you set up and take you where you can be successful. Im a Co kid born and raised i really enjoy bass fishing now, still fish some trout, I know how to fly fish but prefer spinning rods or bait casters. My FIL is a fly fishing nut, he goes on 7-10 guided trips a year and gives x-mas presents of guided trips. I am a big diy’er but I have fun on the trips. I’ll look up the outfit that he likes to go with they are good people and you will catch fish. Plus a 3-5lb trout on a fly rod is a hoot.

What Idahoelk said. Exactly the question to ask. If your here in CO the time of year my be key to the experience. If time of year doesn’t matter then it’s a broader question. Also central CO can be a broad statement. Do you have other plans while here?

Box wood gulch is “central co” also it is fed by a pipeline that is controlled so I don’t think it will be too high in June unlike pretty much every other river in the state.
