If a unit is taking 0 points to draw, does that mean I can put in for a Pref point as my first choice, and likely draw that unit as my 2nd choice?

i had that same thought last year... and didn get the tag.... yes you can possibly get the unit with a 2nd choice... but a % of people will not.

I thought that means you have zero points and you’re putting it as a first choice hunt. You don’t get pref pt if you draw. I thought 2nd choice is 2nd choice. I think that’s different than drawing with zero. But not sure. Good question!

if its "drawing" with zero it means some folks are drawing it with zero points.... which means

A. its not a popular unit
and/or
B. there are a ton of tags going out for that unit

So if you decide to aim for a point for your first choice and put that as your 2nd choice, you have a chance of getting the tag... but you can put any unit as a 2nd choice and have a chance of getting the tag....

year to year it will depend on how many folks put the unit in question as a first choice... cause then the tags go preferential to them... and how many points they are willing to spend on the unit... currently "0" but that can change.

There is also the calculation of the % of resident tags allotted vs. non-res tags allotted and who puts it as their first choice vs. 2nd choice

Have a look at the ‘Drawn out at’ stats. If it says something like ‘0 pts - 45 of 50’ it means that the tag quota ran out at the 1st choice, zero-point level, and there was a draw among those applicants 50 first choice applicants that had zero points. If it says ‘2nd Choice - 5 of 50’, it means after all first choice applicants were processed there were 5 tags left over, and a draw was conducted among those 50 applicants that put in for it as a second choice. In other words, if it says ‘0 points’ in the drawn out at column, that particular tag generally is not getting past the first choice round, and you would not be drawing it as a second choice and getting a PP with your first choice.

Check the draw recap report. If some folks drew it as their 2nd choice last year then, yes, it would be reasonable to expect a chance of doing the same next year. The chance of it actually occurring depends on the number of tags remaining after the 1st choice draw and the number of other folks who also select that tag as their 2nd choice.
